After 35+years in the aviation industry since starting in April 1984, I have finally invested in the next chapter of my life after trying to retire twice. I guess the third time is the charm. I worked for Cessna Aircraft in Wichita for two years and Martin Marietta (now Lockheed-Martin) in Orlando for four and a half years before coming to Boeing to work the 777 program in 1990. I have a strong and balanced engineering background that started in design, was in the MRB world for a while and enjoyed being a strong customer advocate and helping to deal with resolving in-service issues. I accumulated 24 years of experience on the 737 program working systems, propulsion and structures issues and was fortunate to participate in and lead cross-functional multi-tiered teams in addressing customer needs, including my role as a 737NG Deputy Fleet Support Chief for over 8 years . I got to know the 737 platform very well across all ATA's. After 11 months of retirement from Boeing the first time July ‘16, I took the opportunity to work for GKN Aerospace in Sumner, WA at their new state of the art manufacturing center for the 737MAX winglet. My roles included liaison work, some manufacturing engineering work, some tool design, technical writing....and taking on lots of little projects to improve efficiency and productivity. After two years at GKN, I decided I wanted to go back to Boeing for a short period to help get the 737MAX production line healthy again. I spent a little over a year back inside and in December of ‘20, I turned in my badge for good. I had a great ride in the aviation / aerospace industry, met and worked with a lot of wonderful, smart and talented people. I traveled the world supporting the 737 fleet and made a great living. I’m now spending time in my wood shop and have started an overhaul of our kitchen with new cabinetry and a redesigned layout. Diana and I plan to travel the US in our camper and also will spend time on the Puget Sound and Canadian Islands on our boat.

RetiredRetired Dec 2020 - Oct 2021After 35+ years in the aviation and aerospace industry, I am finally moving into the next phase of life. I’ve tried it twice before but this time it is going to stick. The “third time is the charm” as the old saying goes. I’ve had a great career, experiencing all kinds of amazing things working in this dynamic industry. I saw the world through my many travels and met and worked with lots of fine smart professionals. My years in the Boeing customer support world were the finest and funnest - supporting the 737 classic and NG fleets in my roles in Service Engineering for 11 years and as a 737NG Deputy Fleet Chief for 8+ years. Boeing was a great place to work but my glory days are done. As the great philosopher Tom Petty said “It’s time to move on, time to get goin’. What lies ahead I have no way of knowin’ “. I look forward to what lies ahead but certainly will miss all of the amazing people I’ve had a chance to work for and with.

Independent ContractorBoeing Aug 2019 - Dec 2020RentonAfter two years at GKN Aerospace, I decided to close out my career in the aviation business by coming back to Boeing to help get the 737MAX production system healthy again. I am working on bringing new technology into the way the airplane is built. The team I am associated with is tasked with the ultimate goal of the replacement of legacy systems that are used on the floor to facilitate the day to day process of building the 737MAX. It is a new role for me even though I am in an environment that I am very comfortable in. It's nice to be around airplanes again. -
Sr. Manufacturing EngineerGkn Aerospace Jun 2017 - Jul 2019SumnerI left GKN in July of 2019 after spending two great years there helping the team to assemble and paint the amazing winglet for the 737MAX. Great job, great people, but it was time to move onto something different to close out my career in the aviation industry. ……….I am now working at GKN in Sumner at their 737MAX Winglet manufacturing center. Because I received so many notes saying "congratulations.... but why did you go back to work?", I decided to update this to let you all know what is going on. I took 6 months off after leaving Boeing in July 2016 and caught up on things. In January 2017 I started a woodworking program at a local technical college. I learned a ton about woodworking and about myself. But we are not quite ready to retire since Diana is still watching her grandson 3 days a week for the next couple of years. So I landed this GKN job which among other things is only 20 minutes from my home (my commute to Boeing was 90 minutes each way). I really am enjoying it - I am helping to build the winglet for the 737MAX so it is still in my wheelhouse. I am doing some liaison work, some manufacturing engineering work, some tool design, technical writing....and taking on lots of little projects to improve efficiency and productivity. I plan to work a few more years and call it good for good.I loved the time off - my 11 months of early retirement were fantastic - but since I am still pretty young (56), I decided going back into aviation for a few more years was the right thing to do. And having had the 11 months of freedom, it makes me really look forward to when I really hang it up!! -
