Thanehall Ltd is a small engineering firm based in Norwich, specialising in the design, development, and integration of bespoke Automatic Test Equipment; as well as providing maintenance, technical documentation, and user training.I founded Thanehall Ltd in 1985. As can be seen from my work history, at times I have worked off-site as a contractor and delegated the day-to-day running of the office to other people. However, I have often had significant involvement in the technical development of our test and measurement solutions.Examples of projects include:The design and development of the hardware and software for a 6U rugged laptop-controlled avionics test solution. Designed to meet MIL-STD-810F, the equipment has been qualified at test houses (successfully completed in February 2016) and is currently undergoing extensive trials as part of the Declaration of Design and Performance.The design and development of the hardware and software for a bespoke In-Circuit Tester system, providing verification tests for two units located in a bed of nails test fixture. The software was written in National Instruments LabWindows and LabVIEW and controls mainly USB instrumentation and some bespoke instrumentation, including a high and low voltage signal switch matrix, and a DC power supply.The design and integration of testbench software, synchronising a simulated SSR ground station with an IFF Transponder via MIL-STD-1553B and an Industrial PC, using Data Acquisition (DAQ) cards and software written in ‘C’ using LabWindows.The Integration of automatic test equipment hardware and software for various Eurofighter Units Under Test including Aircraft Crypto Variable Management Unit, Universal Time Coordinated (UTC) Clock, digital and RF Printed Circuit Boards.I also designed and set-up Thanehall's ISO 9001 Quality Management System covering the hardware, software and documentation scope required by the company.

Management of Zinwave’s factory ATE's, including hardware and software updates and maintenance.Introduction of new products onto existing platforms, and the design and integration of new test systems with a new script-based LabVIEW software core interfacing with RF, optical and general-purpose interfaces to support new PCBAs and High-Level Assemblies.

Designed semi-automatic test boxes and test cable interfaces for testing an Aircraft Data And Heading Reference Unit (ADAHRU) and an Integrated Secondary Flight Display (ISFD); the systems interfaced with a Ballard OmniBusBox ARINC 429 test box and a Druck Air Data Test Set (ADTS 405).Wrote a LabVIEW program to automate Air Data tests via Excel Test Sheets, the program interfaced with a Python program that I wrote to control ARINC 429 messages within the Ballard OmniBusBox.

Wrote and integrated a LabVIEW program under a non-disclosure agreement. No more detail possible.

Developed a File Collection Utility for test reports and increased the First Pass Yield to over 90% at the assembly level, with program modifications derived from analysis of data collected from the factory.Wrote an ESS Burn-In program in LabVIEW, controlling parallel UUTs.Having helped setup production lines in Korea and China for the product, supported all of the associated test programs written in LabVIEW, testing 4G radio head products at module and assembly level.

Designed and implemented a test system with ZigBee RF simulators using USB controlled Eurocard assemblies, each with 40 Telegesis ETRX2 modules interfaced with Microchip PIC24’s. The hardware included 4 different multi-layer PCBs including backplane, control, daughter boards (8 off) and piggyback RF boards (40 off); all controlled by National Instruments USB devices.Wrote software using National Instruments LabVIEW, providing applications with a GUI and a control and measurement interface for Python, allowing LabVIEW application control via Python scripts.RF support tasks for larger installations with sometimes up to 800 Zigbee nodes.

Generated test cases for GSM type approval equipment for GSM Phase 2+ (HSC), and further modifications to the test cases for GPRS in a Microsoft Visual C environment

Wrote device drivers, self-test, and RF signal quality tests for a TETRA type approval system.Developed system requirements in preparation for a type approval system for ICO satellite handsets

Generated detailed design documentation using Cadre Teamwork for three software modules written in ANSI ‘C’ to fulfil the ‘V’ model system development process

Wrote ATLAS test Programs to IEEE 71689 C/ATLAS standard and device drivers for testing the ECR90 radar processor using the Personal ATLAS Work Station Software (PAWS).Defined and wrote test procedures and calibration routines for Radio Frequency tests of the ECR 90 Radar Waveguide unit using an RF sweeper, a scalar network analyser, and a digital oscilloscope.Wrote modules in ANSI ‘C’ to control a Logic Analysis System and Peak Power Analyser via GPIB.

Wrote applications for printing personalised children’s books using Microsoft C600 and Clipper.

Wrote test modules in Z80 assembler, REMUS ATLAS, BASIC and machine code to test internal circuits of the DEA64 digital communications equipment on the REMUS automatic test equipment programme.Designed and presented training courses to the German Army.

Updated test programs on a range of Tornado LRUs, whilst redesigning, modifying and commissioning changes to interface adaptors.

Originally appointed as a Test Programmer on combat aircraft (Tornado) control systems (CSAS), responsible for writing test and diagnostic analysis from Acceptance Test Procedures, Aircraft Ground Equipment data sheets, and circuit diagrams.Attended a company-run software conversion course for hardware engineers, providing skills in ATLAS, C, and Assembler.Wrote and commissioned test programs in ATLAS, ATAL, interpretive machine code, and assembler for testing various types of equipment. This included the Tornado Autopilot, CSAS and Inertial Navigation equipment and the Lockheed Martin F16 head-up display unit.Responsible for the control of subcontract design and development tasks with a consortium partner based in Germany. This involved attending, and sometimes chairing, monthly tri-nation progress meetings and offering support on technical issues.
