Since 2015 I have spent my free time teaching recreational scuba diving through PADI. Since 2018 I have taught technical diving through TDI. I have found that my time as a closed circuit rebreather diver and dive instructor has helped me in many ways to be a better leader, to help coach and grow talent, and to help take calculated risks.

▪ Spent time with my two kids under 3.▪ Helped a friend with a startup ▪ Established the 4 person engineering team and led initial development effort. ▪ Helped the leadership scope and focus the product vision into an achievable execution plan. ▪ Took a proof of concept to a true minimum viable product. ▪ Introduced telemetry for tracking business objectives and operational monitoring. ▪ Developed a cost effective strategy to leverage Generative AI within the product and built prototypes. ▪ Introduced planning and spec writing process and established best practices for shipping code.▪ Taught people to safely conduct staged decompression scuba dives where they do not have direct access to the surface.

Platform Identity (October 2021 – Present)▪ Responsible for key components of Platform engineering at DocuSign including Authentication, Authorization, Directory, Notifications, Service & Data Protection, and User Management.▪ Led an organization of 45 people including 2 directors with managers reporting to them and 2 managers. Bootstrapped and grew two teams from the ground up.▪ Maintained 99.999% availability across multiple high load/low latency production services while my teams serve as an example across all live services at DocuSign.▪ Maintained exceptional poll numbers and low attrition (4% in 2023).▪ Leadership sponsor for on prem to Azure migration of all Platform. Drove timeline and technical strategy across multidisciplinary teams▪ Key driver of new DocuSign tenancy model to scale to a platform beyond a single product solution, solving real world customer pain points while reducing support and adoption costs.▪ Led effort to reduce fraud and account takeover attempts without harming customer experience through machine learning, while enabling business growth and reducing manual support and sales costs. Developed C Suite level metric to track results.User Platform (September 2019 – October 2021)▪ Led engineering team responsible for all things user at DocuSign including APIs, stores, scaling, management, security.▪ Managed a team of 6 engineers.▪ Helped evolve identity across the core DocuSign platform as well as numerous product acquisitions during a period of major growth.▪ Focused on GDPR, data privacy, and compliance as DocuSign grew its customer base in the EU.September 2016 – September 2019▪ Tech lead for authentication team with a focus on protocols like OpenID Connect and account security.▪ Built and took to market DocuSign’s two factor authentication solution and locked account recovery feature.▪ Reduced login latency by 58%.▪ Served as technical architect for services at DocuSign to integrate with centralized identity platform.

Exchange Server (May 2013 – September 2016)▪ Authentication tech lead for entire Outlook Web App platform▪ Delivered unified authentication for Hotmail on Office 365.▪ Drove key auth and security architecture and decisions throughout the Exchange organization.Azure (January 2012 – May 2013)▪ Built management APIs for PaaS and IaaS cloud platform.▪ Designed and implemented early Azure update service.▪ Team expert on identity.Windows Essential Business Server (June 2008 – March 2010)▪ Implemented telemetry pipeline and data point collection.▪ Built device health monitoring management page.▪ Shipped a v1 product.

Scuba diving is my passion. In addition to my job as a software engineer, I helped found and launch Bellevue Divers towards the end of 2014. I assisted there as a scuba instructor, training students of all levels up to divemaster while at the same time furthering my own training as an instructor, technical, and rebreather diver. The shop was a failure, but it was a period of deep learning and growth which I have been able to apply to all areas of work and life.
