Seeking Next Opportunity!
Infrastructure Manager
My most recent and last position at KCOM was that of the Infrastructure Manager. This included managing 3 teams of engineers and being responsible for all corporate server, storage, backup and restore, monitoring, remote access, databases and productivity applications (Email, AD, O365). During my short time in position, KCOM sold their National ICT business including all the monitoring systems. Myself and the team implemented a new virtualisation platform built to comply with upcoming Telecoms Security Requirements, and replaced all the monitoring tools sold off with an alternative solution costing 10% of the previous. Other projects during this time included upgrading over 250 Windows servers, migrating 1200 on-prem sharepoint sites to sharepoint online, Email migration from on prem to O365, major refresh of the DPI solution, modernisation and renewal/virtualisation of physical servers including those supporting our ISP consumers.
Oss And Si Manager
As the managed services developed and more customers and devices were on boarded, the collaboration between the SI and OSS teams was becoming more and more crucial. At my suggestion, the SI and OSS teams were brought together under one manager (myself). I was managing a team of 10 people, 6 Systems Engineer and 4 Solutions consultants. Although Wikipedia says DevOps started in about 2007, I think we were first in 2005! Bringing the operational and the development teams together made it much easier to bring new services into operation, and it became much clearer to see that sometimes the operational teams needed more support on a new service or capability and that the development teams needs to listen to and understand the challenges of the operation teams!During this time, Omnetica was purchased by KCOM. Significant projects completed during this time included 2 major technology refreshes that significantly improved business continuity and fault tolerance, a new backup / restore system, introduction of secure partner access, a major update of Netcool and Ehealth, a complete overhaul (multi-million pounds) of the monitoring software used, gaining PCI DSS, CAS(T), PSN, HSCN, ISO27001 and Cyber Essentials Plus accreditations and the ability to monitor the services our customers relied on in their networks, rather than just monitoring the devices. Also introduced during this time was KCOM Workplaces – a hosted UC and CC solution for which I was the service assurance TDA.
Solutions Consultant Team Leader
After a year in Solutions Integration, the team had grown to 4 Solutions Consultants. I was promoted to Team leader and my main responsibilities included making sure the SI team and the newly renamed OSS team (the Systems Engineers running the managed services servers and applications on a daily basis) were working closely and well together, to help bring system developments into live service, and to manage and support the other 3 Solutions Consultants. During this time, the managed services network was re-engineered to be more secure and more scalable and new LAN, Wireless and Unified Communications managed services were introduced into live service.
Solutions Consultant
As a Solutions Consultant in Solutions Integration my responsibilities included developing our monitoring and management systems to support new types of device, producing documentation for Sales and Service delivery teams to use to develop their relationships and contracts with their customers, and to help build the roadmap and strategy for the Managed Services operation into the future.
Systems Engineering Team Leader
After only 6 months in the job, my manager left and I was on my own! This was probably the best thing that could have ever happened to me (although it didnt feel like it at the time!). I thrived under the pressure of being 'on my own' looking after 25-30 servers providing managed services to the growing number of customers. During this time, due to the success of the company our customer base was growing and we took on 3 other apprentice system admins for who I became team leader. We also developed and introduced a Firewall managed service using Check Point Provider-1. This was a very exciting time, with the customer base growing and the services offered developing at a fast pace. It soon became a struggle to balance systems administration tasks and systems and services development, so I proposed to senior management that operations and development were separated into 2 different areas. This suggestion was taken up and a new team was formed – Solutions Integration – I was the first member of the new Solutions Integration team as a Solutions Consultant.
Systems Engineer, Managed Services
I joined Seimens Network Systems Ltd with little prior experience in their recently formed Managed Services practice helping my manager/team leader maintain and update Network monitoring systems including Netcool, Ehealth, Netbackup, Check Point Firewalls, an Oracle DB based Remedy ticketing system and Customer web portals for a number of Managed service customers including Diageo, Guinness, Coca Cola Services, GUS PLC, Resorts Condominium International. I learned very early that you have to understand the basics, and that if something is to be done, it is to be done right first time! I was responsible for the daily administration of the Solaris servers, making changes to the monitoring applications via change control, and investigating and fixing faults. I was also responsible for the maintenance and updates to the Corporate and Managed Services Check Point firewalls.
Section Manager, Branch Audit
When my Section Manager left I utilised the learning I'd obtained from the fast track management training and became the youngest Branch Audit Section Manager the branch had had. Responsibilities included scheduling, arranging and managing the annual department audits, feeding the results back to department managers, organising resourcing of processing price changes (manually created price tickets back then!), developing the newly appointed branch audit administrator and ensuring all department responsibilities were completed.
Branch Audit Administrator/Assistant
Wanting to progress my career doing something other than shop floor selling I applied to become the assistant/administrator in the Branch Audit department. Responsibilities included performing annual audits on each department, investigating register discrepancies and maintaining good cash handling procedures through the branch. I completed the fast track management training while in this role.
Sales Assistant
My first full time job after A levels. I worked in the Sports Department at Heelas (now John Lewis Reading). Towards the end I was responsible for the golf section, which I helped to be the second largest golf section for revenue after Oxford Street!
Part Time Office Cleaner
People don't really add part time jobs they did through college, etc, but the reason this one is on here is because I reset the expectations of the company's owner who was reluctant to employ a 16 year old as they were far too unreliable. I did an excellent job as part of a 4 person team, being offered extra work at the weekend to clean carpets! The boss did employ other young people after me....
