Mike Carroll Work Experience Details
  • Dfas
Technical Lead & Senior Identity Management Architect
    Dfas Jun 2012 - Present
    Indianapolis, Indiana Area
I am currently working with DFAS in deploying a cutting edge solution for identity management using Oracle Access Manager for several very very very large systems. It is truly bleeding edge work that as a consultant you get a few shots like this in your career to be THAT person who does it.In addition I am privileged to collaborating with several other senior technical resources on a three year federal contract. A viso document has me as the "lead": but the reality is they are senior consultants who require very little motivation and are focused on taking care of the clients needs. I was very fortunate to locate such talented resources when I was putting together the RFQ for the contract.
  • University Of Puget Sound
    Consultant
University Of Puget Sound 2009 - Present
I was responsible for managing all of their Oracle Fusion Middleware products including a few smaller non-oracle systems. The University is on the absolute bleeding edge for Oracle implementations and the work I have done there will be the bench-mark for any other Fusion middleware implementation in the world IMO. I feel very lucky to have them as a client and everyone there is great to work with. They pay me to build cool stuff...how does it get better then that? :)
  • Perpetual Technologies
    Consultant
Perpetual Technologies Mar 2005 - Present
I've been with PTI for quite a few years now. I started off working in the Federal side working as a contractor before transiting to the commercial side to work more one-on-one with clients and their needs. I get to be there from the very beginning where they outline a vision and I get to put together proposal, and hopefully develop, something that meets that vision. It is a great place to work and everyone is super nice and we have so many talented people: often with talents that differ substantially from my own which makes it an easy please to grow.
  • Smarter Remarketer
    Senior Solr Consultant
    Smarter Remarketer Jan 2012 - Apr 2012
    Indianapolis, Indiana Area
I'm currently working on a project to integrate custom search using Solr which is built on top of Apache Lucene. Solr is really cool because you can do loose-words matching across a variety of input sources ranging from direct database feeds to PDF documents to provide Google-like search results. If you have ever used the search functionality on Amazon.com you have interacted with Solr to find the item you were looking for. It is also really light-weight and works great in a cloud enabled environment on CentOS.
  • Indianapolis Power & Light
    Senior Java Consultant
    Indianapolis Power & Light Aug 2011 - Apr 2012
    Indianapolis, Indiana Area
I just finished implementing the first phase, of a multi-phase project, to track cost associated with power generation that is sold on the wholesale market through different energy brokers. This project represented the model for what is possible with open source software. We are running on existing hardware that was virtualized with the free version of VMware, on a Centos O/S, using Java with Apache/Tomcat as the web/application server. Total recurring cost = 0.
  • Citizens Gas
    Senior Consultant
    Citizens Gas 2009 - Mar 2011
I help support there CRM system for end user service. Did you have a problem with your gas bill and had to call in? You used the system I helped keep up and running.
  • Dfas
    Senior Consultant
    Dfas 2002 - 2009
I was a jack of all trades and a master of quite a few :) The niche I helped fill at DFAS was bridging the gap between infrastructure & application development. I worked quite a bit with various SSO platforms and had the opportunity to start off as the JR, then mid-range, then senior Java guy over a 7 year period. The solutions I did at DFAS are still part of the rolodex of situations I still sometimes goto to answer the question "How did I solve this problem before?" . The mindset I still carry years later after working there is a deep understanding of security and the critical role it plays in an IT environment. When you work for the DOD in IT you are on the front-line for first defense.
  • Haverstick Consulting
    Consultant
    Haverstick Consulting Jun 2004 - Mar 2005
In my role as a consultant I was often called upon with little advance notice to design & implement complex technical solutions for a variety of diverse customers. This included working with the customers to identify what their needs were, design and build a solutions around the J2EE framework, and build/configure an environment from scratch for the their specific application need. In addition, I spent a great deal of time on a post-implementation basis performing server maintenance in the form of patching, tuning, and infrastructure upgrades on UNIX based systems.
  • Us Department Of Defense
    Dba/Web Administrator
Us Department Of Defense Jul 2002 - Jul 2004
As the DBA/Web Administrator I worked in the infrastructure division developing & maintaining applications and systems for a multitude of different applications within the DoD. Often times this involved both building/administering the environments and developing the applications that reside in them. In addition, I worked closely with developers on other applications in assisting them in coding/tuning there applications to take advantage of specific application and database server features to achieve the goal of high availability and scalability.
