During the last two decades, I have developed an intense academic interest in machine failure mechanisms and root cause analysis of electrical machinery failure. This has led me to develop a widely acclaimed one-day in-house high voltage machine maintenance course, which has been presented to 50 companies in the last decade.

During my lifetime as an electrical machine specialist, I have worked with many organisations and trained thousands of technical staff working with electrical machinery. A selection of my electrical machine experience includes:◼ Rolls Royce Bayonne Energy Centre (USA) – Lead engineer on 50,000 hour inspections of 8 Siemens GT Generators◼ Barrick Hydes Power Station PNG – Project manage the recovery of 3 simultaneously failed Ideal generators◼ BHP Newcastle – redesign and rewind of 10MW English Electric steam turbine generator◼ BHP Nickel West – Specification and owners engineer on re-wind of 12MVA GEC steam turbine generator◼ BHP Yabulu – Specification and supervision of 2 15MVA Mitsubishi steam turbine generator stators and 1 rotor◼ CS Energy – Owners engineer on in-situ stator re-wind of B2 gas turbine generator ◼ CSR Sugar – Generator reliability survey on 8 co-gen units ◼ Mighty River Power Hydro – Risk modelling and remnant life study to establish end of life refurbishment program◼ Mighty River Power Geothermal (Kawerau, Nga Awa Purua, Ngatamariki Plants) – Design review and factory witness testing, brush salient pole geothermal generator testing, interpretation and risk modelling of condition monitoring data for the entire fleet of geothermal generators.◼ Pacific Power Liddell Power Station (GEC) – Supervision of night shift winding team on the rewind of 400MW steam turbine generator◼ Power & Water Authority – Katherine Power Station, Channel Island Power Station and in NT◼ Stanwell Corporation◼ Transpower Haywards Substation

In 1999, I set up a highly successful web- and service-based electrical machines consultancy, Machinemonitor Pty Ltd. The company had a strong focus on R&D innovation. We specialised in:◼ HV machines ◼ Partial discharges ◼ Risk assessment – HV machines ◼ Hazardous area audits ◼ Low voltage and high voltage testing ◼ Machine inspections ◼ Repair audits ◼ Failure investigations ◼ Life cycle maintenance plans for HV motors and generatorsAs well as all the functions of managing a growing business, I gave technical seminars and presentations in Australasia and North America. In 2020, I sold the business to existing shareholders in order to spend more time coaching and mentoring the next generation of electrical engineers.

I founded and ran this electrical rewind company which was involved in the repair and redesign of electric motors and generators. I grew the company from a sole trader to employing 50 staff. We were awarded Telstra Australian Small Business of the Year and were the repairer of choice for many industries. In 1996 the company was acquired by a listed Singaporean motor manufacturer.
