I have a B.S. in Physics and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, both from the University of Texas at Austin. (This followed two and a half years at Texas A&M which I attended on a football scholarship.) From 1969 to 1987 I was as a Professor of Industrial Engineering and Director of the Science and Public Policy Program at the University of Oklahoma. In the Summer 1984 I had the great pleasure of being the Faculty Advisor for the WISE (Washington Internship for Students of Engineering) Program and from 1987-1997 was the (part-time) WISE Program Director. In 1987, I became Associate Vice President for Research at Florida State University. Among many other responsibilities, I initiated an active and successful technology transfer program that substantially increased patenting and licensing activity, including the Taxol license that ultimately generated over $350 million in royalties. In 1995 I became the Vice Chancellor for Research at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville. In 2000, I moved back to Tallahassee as the Executive Director of the non-profit MDS Research Foundation and its affiliate, the SynCure Cancer Research Foundation, where I served until 2012. From 2009-2013 I was also the Executive Director of FL CURED in the FSU College of Medicine. Since 2009 I have been teaching a course “Technology Entrepreneurship and Commercialization", that was first developed in 1994 while Associate VP for Research at FSU. I am presently the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering's Entrepreneur in Residence and am an affiliate with the Jim Moran College of Entrepreneurship at FSU.
