Born in the coal camp of "Roda" Va. 5/23/1944. One Brother, Jim, 8 years older, and one Sister, Jane Ann, 4 years older. Undergraduate at UVA after high school in Appalachia, Va. From 1962 to 1966. Medical College of Va. 1966 to 1970. Rotating internship at Roanoke, Va, 1970 to 1971. Grandfathered in to American Board of Family Practice from 1974 to 1999. Have practiced here in Appalachia, and Big Stone Gap now for 43 years. I still practice, and make home visits when necessary. I have also been team physician for 43 years, and our sports physicals have and continue to be free as a community service to any student who needs one! I enjoy talking to my patients and appear "slow as Christmas" but we get the job done! My wife, Una Fay is my office nurse and I could not do without her. I have become totally disenchanted with the politics of modern medicine. Insurance carriers are concerned about "cost" which translates to "profit" and the patient suffers for it. I was born poor and will die the same, but the riches will persist in my knowing that I did a good job for my fellowman. Many of the "Docs" of today are poorly trained and as they are finding out about organized medicine, they realize they cannot survive without umbrella protection from large hospital chains. Medicare pays me $20.00 reimbursement when I give a patient a pneumovax......the injection costs me 5 for $495......or about $100.00 per shot. This is but one example of the duress we are under daily. I pay my patient out of my pocket $80.00 for them to take the injection that Medicare requires me to give! Mike Ford, M.D.
