R&D Lead for Division A (Critical Care, Cancer and Surgery)

Caudwell Xtreme Everest is research collaboration between the UCL Centre for Altitude, Space and Extreme environment medicine (CASE), the University of Southampton Centre for Human Integrative Physiology (CHiP) and Duke University Medical College in North Carolina, USA.The group placed a research team on the summit of Mount Everest in May 2007 and made the first ever measurement of the level of oxygen in human blood above 8000 metres. They are conducting an ongoing programme of research into human adaptation to hypoxia (low oxygen levels) with the aim of improving the care of the critically ill and other patients where hypoxia is a fundamental problem. Current work is focussed on:1. Early clinical evaluation of novel interventions and biomakers.2. Hypoxic chamber and tent studies for complex small group physiological studies3. Development work and multi-stage application leading to the award of £25.25 million NIHR award for Southampton NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (2022-27)

Established and developed peer-reviewed open access, online journal focussing on integrative human physiology under conditions of physiological stress, including that exerted by extreme environments, exercise and certain clinical conditions. PubMed and PubMed Central listed.
