The Revd Canon Dr Mike Kirby BSc, BTh, MSc, MA, PhD, MIPEM, CSci, FBIR, FHEAPersonal StatementMike began work in the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) more than 30 years ago, as a Radiotherapy Physicist at the Christie Hospital, Manchester. He helped set up Rosemere Cancer Centre in Preston from 1996 as deputy Head of Radiotherapy Physics and Consultant Clinical Scientist there. He moved back to the Christie in 2007 as Head of Radiotherapy Physics and Consultant Clinical Scientist for the Satellite Centres and helped to lead their development in Oldham and Salford. Mike has graduate and postgraduate qualifications in Physics and Medical Physics from the Universities of Durham, Birmingham, and Manchester. He has professional membership of IPEM, AAPM, ASTRO, BIR, ESTRO, is a Chartered Scientist (CSci) and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) in the UK. He is an expert lecturer and consultant for the IAEA specialising in OMS/RandV systems. As well as a lecturer (Radiotherapy Physics) at Liverpool University, he is an Honorary Lecturer in Cancer Sciences (School of Medical Sciences) at Manchester University as a supervisor for the national HSST Program for doctoral level training of Clinical Scientists within the UK. Nationally he was chair of the BIR's Radiotherapy and Oncology SIG ('19-'22), was made a Fellow of the BIR in '22 and is a member of the task force for Action Radiotherapy in support of the All Party Parliamentary Group for RT. Mike is also a priest in the Church of England; having trained and studied at Westcott House and the Universities of Cambridge and Cumbria, he holds graduate and postgraduate degrees in Theology. His ministry has been in the Cathedrals of Blackburn, Chester, and Liverpool (Anglican) where he is presently Canon Scientist. He is a member of the Society of Ordained Scientists, has given numerous talks on Science and Faith and organised cathedral based lecture series at Blackburn (2016), Chester (2018) and Liverpool (2019 - present); the latter now being a hybrid of in-person and online lectures.
