ALcontrol Laboratories is a private equity backed (GSO/Blackstone) laboratory services business (c €120m turnover, 1500 people) serving European food and environmental markets. As a member of the 6-strong Group Executive team I held a variety of leadership roles for UK trading divisions under 4 ownerships from 1 January 2000 - 31 December 2016, leaving following the sale of the UK food and environmental business to ALS in late 2016.As MD UK&I Food & Waters I held leadership and P&L responsibility for a business of 450 people providing testing services to food manufacturers and UK water treatment and hygiene markets. Established new team, transformed culture and people processes and raised service standard - first UK contract lab to gain Institute of Customer Services Service Mark accreditation. Translated service success into profit improvement via pricing and high customer retention. Refocused sales strategy to focus on ideal customers and transitioned customer portfolio away from lower margin contracts. Extensive experience of cost down and restructuring (moved from 10 sites to 5 and changed core business system in Waters).

P&L responsibility reporting to CEO for a business of 150 people providing water testing services to utilities, water hygiene industry and local authorities. Led water hygiene growth plan to ensure business sustainable beyond large utility contract ending 2010. Restructured overhead and systems to be fit-for-purpose for new leaner business model. Engaged in customer-relationship management, regulatory management in lean business.

P&L responsibility reporting to UK MD and later CEO for a business of 300 people providing environmental testing services to environmental consultants and remediation markets. Led integration of acquisitions and restructured from 6 sites to 3, during major growth phase. Oversaw move to new “super-lab” at Hawarden in 2005, enabling later consolidation to a single site, and immediately enabling processing of additional volume and revenue during economic boom. Professionalised and standardised Quality Management infrastructure (ISO17025 accredited).Integrated oil testing business to ALcontrol following acquisition (2005), line managed and oversaw first attainment of ISO17025 for that site.

Project management of “buy and build” acquisition plan reporting to CEO / UK MD and subsequent line management and integration of an environmental testing acquisition. Project managed c 25 UK business development projects through investigation stage to due diligence and completion (in 8 cases) reporting to CEO and UK MD (to 2002). Led creation of integration plans. Held P&L responsibility and line management for 2 environmental testing acquisitions in London, oversaw site relocation, integration and routine operational management (2002-2004).

Project Manager, Yorkshire Water Services 1997-199Management of business change projects for Yorkshire Water Services (YWS), one of the UK’s top 10 water utilities. Project managed introduction of balanced scorecard management reporting across all business units. Following acquisition of York Waterworks by YWS I held responsibility for several strands of the integration and the divestment of York Gas in 1999 under the Group Business Development Director.Finance roles, Yorkshire Water Serviced and Kelda (YWS parent company) 1992-1997 Experience of investment appraisal and ‘value engineering’ as YWS invested c £400m pa in infrastructure.Experience in management accounting, financial accounting roles. Qualified as an accountant (ACCA) with first-time passes. Graduate trainee programme with management skills training.
