This project focuses on developing a conservation plan for the endangered seabirds of Kaua’i. In this position, work included editing, literature research, organizing citations, and technical writing on the threats facing the endangered seabirds. Other duties included forest bird surveys at a proposed mitigation site.

Hanapepe, Kaua'i

This project focuses on the monitoring of known nesting colonies of two of Kaua’i’s endangered seabirds and searching for new nesting colonies. For this position I conducted field work in the high mountains of the Na Pali coastline. During regular backpacking field stints I conducted auditory surveys to assess bird density in a given area and check.

This project focuses on understanding the relationship between oxidative and hormonal status of individuals and behaviors like parental care and singing. For this position I monitor nest boxes of Great Tits and collect and analyze behavioral video and song recordings throughout the breeding season. This project focuses on a variety of work with three endangered endemic Hawaiian songbirds, the Akikiki, Akeke’e and Puaiohi that all inhabit the montane rainforest at located at ~4500ft on the island of Kauai. The position focuses on nest searching and monitoring, and maintaining a rat control grid near active nests. Work also includes conducting surveys.

I assisted a PhD candidate on her dissertation on the effect of host community composition on avian malaria transmission in lowland forest on the Big Island of Hawai’i by cutting net lanes through thickly vegetated forest, capturing mosquitoes in CO2 and water traps, sorting and identifying >7000 mosquitoes to species, mist netting (>100) and banding (100).

I aided in research constructing a beach food web by dissecting fish and invertebrates and searching for parasites as well as entering data. I also aided in beach field work collecting invertebrates and fish.

I aided in the rearing and maintenance of health of the local fish Cabezon in experimental growth tanks. I also aided in the initial stages of larval Cabezon collection by testing pregnant female fish for egg maturity.
