Professor Of Blood Transfusion Medicine
CurrentI am a specialist in haematology and transfusion medicine. My main focus is on improving and developing the evidence base for the safety and efficiency of hospital transfusion practice. I was a co-founder of the NHS Blood & Transplant/Medical Research Council Clinical Studies Unit and its Systematic Reviews Initiative for transfusion medicine. The work of my team on developing an end-to-end electronic transfusion system has won many national awards and has been adopted by the Department of Health as a model for transfusion services. I led the establishment of the National Blood Transfusion Committee in England in 2001 and was its Secretary from 2001 to 2014, and was a driver for the UK Better Blood Transfusion initiative from 1998 to 2012.I am immediate Past-President of AABB (American Association of Blood Banks) and immediate past Chair of the international BEST Research Collaborative.
