Director Risk Infrastructure TechnologyPaypal Apr 2004 - Mar 2013San Jose, Ca, UsThroughout the 9 years I spent with PayPal the business experienced rapid growth post eBay acquisition, which brought a series of unique challenges to solve. The first such challenge was assisting our then 70-person engineering team to scale their processes & tools to improve code release frequency, reduce downtime and provide higher quality to our customers. As a process engineer in our architecture team I:- Helped transform a monthly release to bi-monthly with incremental emergency releases.- Implemented static code analysis using Fortify to improve overall security of our codebase.- Developed technical design document standards and templates for ensuring architecture best practices. - Worked on release and rollback processes to minimize risk and maximize availability. The entire engineering team grew over 9 years from 70 to 2500 engineers worldwide on the processes that we developed during this time. The second major challenge was combating the massive amount of fraud and financial losses PayPal was experiencing. Over an 8-year timespan I progressed from Manager to Director of Risk Infrastructure overseeing a team of 60+ engineers in 4 locations (San Jose, Phoenix, Austin and Shanghai). Our accomplishments include:- Building advanced visualization tools for inspecting large, complex networks of payments globally.- Building the data pipeline for our scientists to build complex fraud models and rules. - Implementing 2 different rules/decision engines including one that was built internally.- Lowered financial losses to historic lows for PayPal saving hundreds of millions of dollars. - Led the Re-architecture from a high-latency, synchronous system prone to failure and slowness to a near real time event stream with low-latency decision-making capabilities. We transitioned from C++ to Java and implemented an event-based messaging framework.- Grew the Risk Technology team by 10x from around 20 technologists to 200+ in at least 4 countries. -
