I am a Senior Product Development Manager at Fisher and Paykel Healthcare, leading a team in Non-Invasive respiratory support system development, with a background in aerosol research and neonatal respiratory devices. I trained as a mechanical engineer at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand, focussing in material science and computer imaging. After graduating I started out as a researcher at the university developing methods for manufacturing bio-resorbable surgical implants before moving to industry to design consumer electronics for companies that include Navman and Trimble. It wasn't long before I found myself back in the medical space designing cellphone-enabled asthma inhalers, anthrax detectors, low vision magnifiers and a brain slice analyser used for training neuropharmacologists at Otago University. I joined Fisher and Paykel Healthcare in 2009 as part of the Optiflow product development team where I have helped bring several successful products to market including neonatal breathing circuits, accessories and the Optiflow Junior cannula system. During the Covid-19 outbreak I lead a research group focussed on understanding bio-aerosol generation and the mechanisms of nosocomial disease transmission.
