About Mike Splain

Conservation Funding Project Manager @ RLF | Public Land Agency and NGO AdvocatePromoting Solutions for Public Land Capacity at RLFWith over 17 years of experience in protecting public lands, my objective is to work with land management agencies and partners to identify and advocate for solutions to the capacity challenges faced by BLM, NPS, USFS, and USFWS. I have a strong background in ecology and evolutionary biology, fundraising, advocacy, and stewardship, as well as certifications in public land management and analysis. In recent roles, I have commissioned economic research, convened stakeholder collaboratives, and engaged with federal decision-makers to present findings and recommendations to address funding shortfalls, staffing gaps, and increasing recreational use of public lands. I leverage previous development director and executive director experience, having led an organization's growth, advocacy, education, and stewardship programs to benefit the Big Sur backcountry. My skills include land conservation, natural history interpretation, fundraising, grant writing, advocacy, stewardship, communication, and outreach. I am motivated by the vision of a diverse and empowered constituency of public land advocates and stewards.

Mike Splain Work Experience Details
  • Smith River Alliance
    Associate Director
Smith River Alliance Jun 2024 - Present
    Gasquet, California, United States
I support the co-executive directors in advocacy and stewardship projects benefitting northwest California and southwest Oregon's spectacular Smith River watershed, from the coast to the heights of the Siskiyou and Kalmiopsis Wilderness areas. Current initiatives include wildfire resiliency, invasive species eradication, travel and visitor use management, and broadening membership to meet the needs and expectations of a new generation of public land and wild river advocates.
  • Resources Legacy Fund
    Conservation Funding Project Manager
Resources Legacy Fund May 2021 - Jun 2024
    Sacramento, California, United States
I worked with land management agencies and partners to identify barriers to BLM, USFS, and USFWS recruitment and hiring and advocate for solutions to public land capacity shortfalls. Tactics included commissioning economic research examining funding trends at federal land management agencies and an expanding capacity gap further compounded by increasing recreational use. I gathered a collaborative of NGO, rural business, and retired agency representatives for a Washington, DC fly-in to present these findings to House, Senate, Department of Interior, Council on Environmental Quality, and other federal decision-makers. I meanwhile engaged with over one hundred California non-profit, conservation corps, tribal, and agency representatives, submitted community sign-on letters, and visited potential project sites across sixteen discrete public land units. Reports and other work products provide a basis for ongoing advocacy for enhanced public land funding, staffing, and partner support.

Additional duties included communication, outreach, and educational tasks such as promoting Wilderness values through social and earned media, and negotiating with other stakeholders and agencies to encourage ecologically-informed management of central coast public lands.
  • Ventana Wilderness Alliance
