About Mike Sullivan

Compelled to observe, discover, interpret and write about the world around me. For the past three decades that focus has sharpened on business and, more specifically, travel and tourism industries. • Wildlife Australia Magazine
    Editor
Wildlife Australia Magazine Jul 2019 - Present
    Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
The Business Acumen magazine team has been publishing Australia's longest-running wildlife conservation magazine, Wildlife Australia, since its 2019 Summer edition in both print and digital forms. Our mandate has been to progress the magazine by improving its editorial, imagery, editorial relationships and commercial partnerships. Wildlife Australia magazine has been published continuously by Wildlife Queensland (the Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland, founded in 1962) since 1963. It regularly publishes articles that feature the innovative work of Australian scientists and researchers, along with project work that is, more often than not, carried out by volunteers. The magazine takes a holistic approach to Australian wildlife preservation and appreciation, including the work of other national and local wildlife organisations. Our team has helped the magazine’s steady turnaround by improving certain editorial and design aspects which have appealed to new subscribers. Now we are focussed on helping Wildlife Australia magazine to continue for another 60 years through innovations including providing stories and images for the Unreal Australia geo-located knowledge platform, where Wildlife Australia and WPSQ can also earn advertising income.
  • Business Acumen Magazine
    Managing Editor
Business Acumen Magazine 2004 - Present
    Brisbane
Business Acumen Magazine has been a market leader since its first edition in 2004, when it began as Business Acumen Queensland. It developed into one of Australia’s very few (and dwindling) national business magazines, appealing to business owners, CEOs, managing directors and department heads of businesses, government departments and tertiary educators across the country. For most of its existence, Business Acumen has been the only magazine focused on Australian business innovation (with a regular section in each edition) and providing a conduit for exposure to assist with growth and attract investment. It is closely watched in government circles as an early indicator of growth companies, innovation and export-ready businesses. Business Acumen has helped develop and promote the landmark exhibitions the Australian Innovation Exhibition (Brisbane 2010) and the Australian Business Development Exhibition (Brisbane 2006 and 2007).Business Acumen is the media partner of Queensland Leaders – and now International Leaders – the unique Australian organisation developing the next generation of leading companies.Acumen was also a media partner with the 2004-2015 Innovation Series luncheon series in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, created by Zernike Australia and supported by AIC, CSIRO, ANSTO and universities QUT and RMIT.Business Acumen is the media partner, and sits on the advisory board, of Digital Business insights' (DBi's) innovative digital business development platforms: the Manufacturing toolbox, the Agriculture Toolbox, the Australian Trade Showcases and the most recent Regional Economic Development (RED) Toolbox and the Education (ED) Toolbox. These are transformative Australian economic development platforms.Business Acumen is now engaged in its most significant business alliance of all, helping to launch the innovative geo-located knowledge platform, UnrealAustralia.com, a related company.
  • Unreal Augmented Reality
    Ceo & Managing Editor
Unreal Augmented Reality Feb 2013 - Present
    Brisbane
UNrealAR is a new and emerging augmented reality content platform that is changing the way we experience the world. The successful prototype platform was taken down in late 2015 for both the online and AR technologies to be re-developed to suit the latest browser and mobile device technologies. UNrealAR is being soft-launched in the UK & Ireland and Australian markets in 2023.
  • Post Haste Graphics
    Director
Post Haste Graphics May 2000 - Apr 2012
    Brisbane
Large format printing, design, colour separations (1998-2003) and, later, digital publishing organisation whose clients included Flight Centre, Harvey World Travel, Travelscene-American Express, Air New Zealand, Brisbane Airport, Signet, the Queensland Government, Maximum Awards, 'Jaguar Australia Magazine', Jaguar Drivers Club of Queensland's magazine, 'Living Planet' magazine for WWF and other publishers and printers. The carnage in the printing industry after April 2008, combined with client business collapses and a series of challenging hits as some former staff and managers took major clients with them to other businesses, resulted in Post Haste Graphics ceasing to trade in April 2012.
  • Wwf 'Living Planet' Magazine - Pangaea Communications P/L
    Co-Founder, Director, Consulting Editor
Wwf 'Living Planet' Magazine - Pangaea Communications P/L Dec 1999 - May 2001
Brisbane Area, Australia & Gland, Switzerland
'Living Planet' magazine was designed as a high quality publication to assist the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in membership attraction and services, while informing the world about the conservation programs and research WWF is engaged in. This was an innovative and transformative project that not only drove and enhanced membership but also promised to deliver 70% of advertising revenues to support WWF programs worldwide -- and cover them in detail, editorially and pictorially. With advertising rates projected in the tens of thousands of dollars per page, this would have grown into very significant support. On behalf of the Australian group, Pangaea Communications, I partnered Marketing Director Max Thomas in forming and conducting negotiations with WWF International in Gland, Switzerland, WWF UK in Godalming, England, and WWF USA in Washington DC. This resulted in editions being produced in the US, where 100,000 copies were distributed to WWF members and a European edition also being formulated. Unfortunately, before 'Living Planet' magazine could deliver on its outstanding promise, conflict within the publisher's executive and owner group disrupted the magazine's trajectory. This was an enormous shame as the publication was, from edition one, held in high esteem by its readers, subscribers and early advertisers. There was also the promise of long-term advertising (and environmental program) support from organisations including Animal Planet, Discovery Channel, British Airways, Mastercard, Canon, LaFarge, MBNA and at the time it looked like many more were to join. Collateral damage from the misguided publisher's internal changes meant I was not involved in the final few editions of 'Living Planet' and I watched at a distance, with great sadness, as the magazine ceased publication in late 2001.

Re-joined Redland Publishers Pty Ltd, now owned by Rural Press Ltd, as Editor and later took on the company's management role as well, with the title Managing Editor.
