Within our Transport & Technology group, our Operations Division looks after our interests in our transport operating business. Within the rail sector, this currently includes Metro Trains Melbourne, Metro Trains Sydney and Canberra Light Rail, with a number of exciting opportunities on the horizon.

Operations Manager for the Transport and Technology division of UGL in Victoria. We specialise in the design and construction of rail and road technological systems.

As part of the Victorian Transport team, with primary responsibility for the leadership, development and growth of the Rail Team. This includes:- Development of the GHD rail business in Victoria- Provision of rail engineering and design input to projects- Mentoring and development of the Rail Team- Direction and technical leadership on nominated projects as Project Director- Client engagement and business development- Developing strategies for teaming and partneringGHD have a team of over 25 dedicated rail industry professionals in Melbourne that form part of the global GHD rail capability.

As Operations Manager for McConnell Dowell I am responsible for tendering, planning and delivering rail projects throughout Australia. This includes;• Client Relationship Development• Pre-contract Management• Pre- Construction Planning & Mobilisation• Project ConstructionI head up the project delivery team within MCD, which includes project delivery staff in each state / region. Recent achievements include being selected as preferred trackworks constructor for the Carmichael Rail Network in northern Queensland. I initiated the Adani / Posco client contact several years prior to the RFP and personally lead MCD’s trackworks tender process. Key projects delivered during this period have also included;• Seaford Rail Line (SA)• FMG Mainline Duplication and Solomon Spur Extension (WA)• Hunter Vallery Rerailing - multiple projects (NSW)• Lloyd Street Grade Separation (WA)I personally lead the $135 million FMG Mainline Duplication and Solomon Spur new line construction on site in the position of Project Director.Key highlights included breakthroughs in shutdown management for FMG, that allowed the works to remain on program, despite earthworks running up to six months late, as well as achieving records for the rate of track construction (over 3.5km per day).

I provided leadership & railway engineering expertise / management services, predominantly to V/Line as Interface Manager for Regional Rail Link - Work Package A. This service to V/Line also included defining all the technical requirements for the Regional Rail Link Project. Engineering Standards had to be developed, based on Operational & Safety Requirements & a process of extensive stakeholder engagement, supported with risk assessments was used to achieve ‘sign off’ for the standards. Work Package A was the early works package for the Regional Rail Link Project & was unique in the range for infrastructure it encompassed. I was able to harness my broad knowledge of rail infrastructure to assist in the successful delivery of this work package.

Reporting to the CEO of V/Line & part of the V/Line Senior Executive Team my primary responsibility was to ensure the safe, effective & efficient maintenance, of the Victorian regional rail network. Accountable for up to 250 direct staff, plus a similar number of subcontractors as required & with a budget in excess of $100m pa.Working with a V/Line passenger business focus including being part of the Crisis Management Team & media spokesperson for infrastructure issues.Key accountabilities included:• Leading the development of long term sustainable Asset Management Plans & ensuring consistency within the business model & access pricing regime.• Developing & implementing robust Infrastructure Management Manual• Stakeholder Interface Management: DoT, PTD, IPD, FLAM, TSV, Freight Operators, Local Councils, VicRoads, DSE, ESC, CFA, Connex, ARTC, VicTrack.• Ensuring Rail Safety Accreditation was retained• Leading the development & implementation of the Annual Works Plans (Routine Maintenance & Renewals), in line with stakeholder requirements, programs & budgets.• Taking responsibility & being primarily accountable for infrastructure performance against a set of KPI’s.• Delivering continuous safety improvement, including incident investigation.• Leading the personnel management of some 200 – 300 staff.• An integral role in the development & delivery of State Capital Works Projects.
