I am a Principal Lecturer in Genetics at the University of Worcester and I am also the Lead for Schools and College Liaison in the School of Science and the Environment at University of Worcester where I manage a successful outreach programme aimed primarily at students from Year 10 to Year 12. Our outreach programme has brought experience of University science to many school and college students in the region over the past few years. It has also resulted in enhanced recruitment in some of our courses.I have an interest in pedagogic research in HE science and I have spent the past few years infusing the Biology curriculum with Bioinformatics in a collaborative approach with students as partners. I run workshops aimed at encouraging undergraduates to take up postgraduate studies which have been really successful. Many of our undergraduates have gone on to Masters degrees and PhDs. I am also currently researching the impact of staff/undergraduate research partnerships on students continuing their studies at postgraduate level. I am acutely interested in the undergraduate student experience and I am currently the co-ordinator for Learning & Teaching in the School of Science and the Environment at the University of Worcester. I am also University Co-ordinator for Joint Honours degrees at the University of Worcester and lead the Joint Honours Independent Study module.My interest in Biological Sciences is very broad. In the past my research has concentrated on plant molecular genetics and in particular cell-cell signalling in Arabidopsis and Physcomitrella. I have published two papers in Nature with the Franklin lab at the University of Birmingham on self incompatibility in Papaver rhoeas. My current research aims to elucidate the function of homologues (SPH) of the Papaver S-protein ligand (PrsS) in other plants. I am currently collaborating with Dr Barend de Graaf at Cardiff University on this project. I am also interested in conservation ecology and have supervised an MRes student studying the effect of farmland management on corn bunting populations and have also jointly supervised an MRes student looking at eDNA detection strategies for otters in riverine systems. I currently have a project analysing the microbiota of heavy-metal contaminated soil and the genomics of bacterial species found in this environment. I am also currently collaborating with the local RSPB group on improving and supplementing winter bird feeding on part of UW campus by planting seed-rich crops.
