I have always enjoyed the challenges associated with Traffic Engineering. I’m passionate about seeing a well-designed project approved and ultimately built, and completed, knowing the end product has been well thought out and operates in a practical, effective manner for the end user. There is no doubt that there are huge changes currently occurring in transportation, including autonomous or electric vehicles, and the development of Smart Cities. I pride myself in being able to achieve creative and cost effective, practical solutions, through the use of my strong technical knowledge and the understanding that we are currently in the midst of a significant phase shift in technology.Through the progression of my career I have gained extensive experience in the private sector which has allowed me to develop a detailed understands of the commercial practicalities associated with developments of all sizes and nature. From this I have been able to focus myself as a leader in Traffic Assessment and Impact Studies and presenting as an Expert Witness.I’m lucky enough to work in a high functioning team with talented people bringing a range of skill sets together, which makes for a great working environment and ultimately results in us being able to provide quality service and a great end product for our clients. As the founder of Amber Organisation I believe in creating a fun, constructive, and productive environment for all team members, in order to help them achieve their goals and experience success and satisfaction. I believe that the ability to help people to achieve their goals in a creative environment is imperative to not only someone’s success, but also to the product that the company produces, and I feel privileged to be able to provide and work in such an environment.

Mike was approached to setup the new Sydney office for TDG. The position requires senior experience and skills in a wide range of transportation engineering tasks as well as consistent high-level contributions to the ongoing development of all of TDG’s business as a premier traffic engineering and transportation planning consultancy in New Zealand and Australia.The role of a Branch manager, as part of the TDG Senior Leadership Team, encompasses a national responsibility for contributing to the management of TDG and delivery of TDG’s Strategic Plan; a branch responsibility for leading and managing a TDG branch office; and a technical responsibility for leading and / or contributing to TDG’s technical deliveries to clients.This is a "hands-on" role that includes undertaking and / or supervising all aspects of the transportation consulting work including initial client contact, securing projects, project management, project supervision of other team members as well as undertaking and / or supervising the full range of transportation analyses and design undertaken by the firm.Through this role Mike was able to improve his leadership and networking skills as he built an office of five people within the year he was within the office. He also had exposure to a wide range of projects, including significant government work, which often involved multi-disciplinary teams. He was involved in leading significant traffic management plans, micro-simulation modelling projects, and detailed design projects for signalised and unsignalised intersections. He also established the office as a leader in sustainable energy, being involved in a number of solar farm and wind farm developments.Following his experience working remotely, Mike established the office so that it was paperless and operated via a cloud based storage system. This allowed all work to be undertaken remotely, if required, and clients to receive immediate answers within meetings.

During Mike's time at Ratio Consultants he primarily focused on working within the private sector. He worked closely with the Town Planning team within Ratio Consultants, giving him a better understanding of the planning process and the role traffic engineering plays in ultimately having a project approved. This role has allowed him to develop a detailed understanding of the commercial practicalities associated with developments of all sizes and nature. Using the range of skills he has acquired he has been able to focus himself as a leader in Traffic Assessment and Impact Studies and presenting as an Expert Witness.During his time with the company Mike developed some of the following new key skills:- A detailed understanding of the design requirements of car stackers and car lifts. - Detailed analysis of parking requirements and demands for a wide range of developments.- CAD skills, including the design of unsignalised intersections.Mike also established himself as a leader within the company. This included establishing his own client base and delegating work to junior team members. He was involved within the hiring process for new staff. He also placed himself within a mentor role for junior staff in order to guide them through their career.Mike worked the final six months working with Ratio Consultants remotely from North and Central America. This showed his excellent communication skills and that the working environment is changing through new technologies which allow us to connect with each other in new and more efficient ways. It also highlighted to him that in order to keep up with today's world we must embrace these technologies.

Mike was awarded the TDG Scholarship and subsequently completed a summer internship with the company. Following this he was appointed as a Transportation Engineer and returned to the company following completing his studies.The position involved Mike in a wide range of traffic planning and transportation engineeringtasks. Such work encompassed all facets of the projects TDG undertakes including client liaison, project management, planning and supervising traffic studies, processing and analysis of transportation data, research; traffic management design, transportation assessments and preparation of reports orstatements of evidence.During this time Mike worked on three key projects; construction traffic management for the Auckland Rail Electrification project, traffic management for the Rugby World Cup, and the design of the Auckland Northwestern Motorway. In addition to this Mike also prepared Traffic Impact Assessments for a wide range of projects throughout Auckland and the wider North Island. This included developing the necessary skills in order to undertaking modelling and design work to prepare the relevant reports.
