Being born into a family where 99% of worked in construction, I started out in Masonry. My Dad was General Foreman for the City of Surrey for over 25 years, back when it was a municipality. His brother, my uncle was the North Vancouver to Pemberton District Manager for the Ministry of Transportations and Hwys. Starting out in single-family residential as a mason’s helper, I developed a great work ethic. Acquiring experiance and knowledge over time graduated me to working on low-rise townhouses, condominiums, and high-rise multi-user. Education on how construction sites work came very quickly. As most know, lifting bricks, blocks and stone all day pays a price on one's body. So In 2010 it was evident that a career change was needed. So what do I do now with all construction knowledge, and experience? You upgrade. With consulting from a career consultant, I made the decision to put down the trowel and pick up the books. After completing numerous courses I formally entered into the OH&S field 2011 as a CSS * OFA III. In addition I've become a Respirator Fit Tester as well as a Personal Fall Protection Instructor with my own full day training program I developed and designed after the BCCSA criteria and Worksafe BC Reg. Working in the oil & gas industry at Cenovus Energy in Cold Lake and Kearl Oil Sand, my real passion has always been Construction. So I decided to build a company and a brand. That's when FreeBird Safety Services was founded. . My basic philosophy as a safety and first aid professional is simple. Don't be the Safety cop, don't act like your the know all of every trade. Talk the the workers, have them explain what they're doing. Give them the instructors hat and teach me your job. In turn that builds relationships. The results are trust and respect developes so bring safety related issues to the site safetys attention. Being on a construction site and gaining the trust and admiration of a crew is an honor. When they know they can count on the safety professional to have their best interest at heart when it comes to their health and safety, creates a very productive site and great working relationships.
