Founded Speak Telecom after researching companies in the space and deciding that there was a niche in the market that could be exploited. I raised the initial debt and equity required to start the company in mid-2004 and we began operating in the fall of that year. While I was responsible for all aspects of the business, I spent most of my time managing our suppliers and contractors, and sales to carrier and enterprise clients.In 2008, Speak was acquired by Distributel, a large independent telecom firm. The post-acquisition transition went smoothly and was a testament to the competency of Distributel's management team.

Northern Rivers Capital Management was a Toronto based hedge fund manager. I worked for its flagship fund, the Northern Rivers Innovation Fund, which was a bottom-up fundamental hedge fund focused on small cap technology, healthcare, and resource companies (both private and public) on the long side and large cap US companies and ETFs on the short side. In 2003, the NRIF returned 75.21% to LPs. Northern Rivers was acquired by Blumont Capital in 2010.I focused primarily on technology and mining companies working directly for the Portfolio Manager. I would originate ideas and meet with management of companies and if we had any real interest in taking a core position in one I would conduct deep dive due diligence. Given that the fund could invest a large percentage of its assets in any individual investment, we would spend considerable effort during the due diligence process meeting with customers and suppliers of the company, attending industry conferences to see the competitive landscape, and gain an understanding of the street's view of the company. After developing our own market and financial models, becoming comfortable with management, and understanding our own investment thesis within the macro economic environment, we would make the decision to invest.
