I led our global flow cytometry R&D organization responsible for sample prep automation, cytometers, sorters, data analysis software, reagents, and reagent applications in both the IVD and research space. In clinical, the focus was on immunophenotyping, immune system monitoring, and transplantation. In biodiscovery, the focus was on drug discovery and cell therapy. I was responsible for five development centers in US, Europe, India, and China as well as a fully-remote software team.

I was the R&D leader for our Indianapolis development center responsible for our automation, genomics, and centrifugation product lines with chief engineers/scientists reporting me. Critical responsibilities include strategic planning, product roadmaps, and the development of talent, leadership, and technology. Major product launches include the Avanti J-15 centrifuge, the FormaPure Total DNA/RNA extraction kit, and the Biomek i-Series liquid handling robots.

I was the Chief Engineer for and primary partner to our automation business unit. In my tenure my team did technology and product concept development for a novel prep system. My team also designed, developed, and launched the Biomek i-Series Liquid Handlers, a major platform update for our flagship line of liquid handlers. We beat revenue commitments by 150% in the first two years of commercialization.

I was the functional manager for the Indianapolis software engineering team. I was accountable for organizational design, talent development, development process, and software quality. I managed individual contributors and software project leads in centrifugation, flow cytometry, and liquid handling.Accomplishments in the group while I managed it:▸ implemented Scrum, successfully completing a nine-month project from start to finish using it▸ augmented our department capacity with an offshore team in India and completed two software releases on time with the team▸ implemented standard metrics to compare schedule estimates to actual time and baseline leading quality indicators based on peer reviews and automated testing▸ added machine learning capability to the group through hiring and talent development▸ started a move to lower-cost and smaller-footprint computing platforms to improve customer experience and lower hardware standard costsIn addition to my primary job, I spent significant time working with our business units on product strategy, product concept development and validation, and engineering feasibility for new products. The latter included leading a feasibility team for a microfluidics-based application.

I was the development lead for clinical informatics. I was accountable for all aspects of development including product definition and roadmap, requirements, feasibility and design, implementation, documentation, and test. The software was developed as a medical device.Interesting technical aspects of the development included an extensible communication infrastructure designed for high safety and reliability, a domain-specific programming language for end users to describe workflow, heavy metaprogramming for object-relational mapping, and the use of model-view-presenter to enable thorough automated testing. Primary technologies used were C#, .NET 4.0, SQL Server 2008, and Windows Server 2008.We implemented significant process improvements during development including continuous integration, automated unit and verification testing, peer code reviews, effort estimates for better schedules, and quality metrics for transparency to QA.This job had significant management responsibility. By 2011 I was managing an engineering organization of 25 engineers across two development sites in the U.S. I was also responsible for a retained team in China. I was accountable to executive management for budget, organizational design, recruiting, and talent development as well as product delivery and quality.

I was team lead for Biomek Assay Workstation development. I was responsible for requirements and high-level design coherency. I solved technical problems in planning and scheduling automated systems. I coded the initial implementation of the system executive in Chez Scheme with another developer.The team started with four developers and peaked at ten. The entire team was located at Beckman Coulter's Indianapolis location and consisted of a mix of experienced and new developers. The team was responsible for both development and test.I also participated in system launch, application support training, pre-sales support, and post-sales support in first year of release. This work was done while continuing to lead the team on the second release.

I joined Beckman Coulter late in Biomek liquid handler development and helped to launch it. My work included unit testing, software/hardware integration testing, usability testing, and participating in the trade-show launch (sales training, engineering support on the show floor, etc).I created a plate replication wizard add-on for the Biomek FX software. The application user interface was written in Delphi, and the backend was written in Chez Scheme. The two interoperated using a simplified (automation only) COM interface.I implemented COM in Chez Scheme with another developer at Beckman Coulter.

Maintained research program, wrote funded grant proposals, supervised graduate students, and taught undergraduate and graduate courses.

Research assistant at Oberlin College, Los Alamos National Labs, Xerox PARC, Oregon Graduate Institute, and Indiana University. Work involved programming language design and implementation. Projects included a distributed functional language implementation, a metaobject protocol-based Scheme compiler, partial evaluation, static analysis, and non-standard control operators for logic programming.
