Starting part-time while still in college in 1989 and becoming full-time in 1992 upon my graduation, I learned paste-up, page layout, ad stack philosophy and other prepress skills during this period. Began training on the Harris ad layout system which was the first electronic, desktop publishing style system employed by the News. I also learned photographic and dark room skills while in this position.

Section editor and staff writer for student newspaper. This is where I 'cut my teeth' so to speak on newspaper layout and design, editing, reporting and just about every aspect of journalism and newspapers that I've been a part of since. At different points I was in charge of the sports and features sections of the paper, assigning and/or writing stories, editing, sometimes taking photographs, doing the layout design and paste-up, the whole nine-yards really.

I started out as an assembly helper working on electrical substation components. I subsequently became the saw operator in charge of cutting all beams, channels and tubing for substation jobs. Prior to leaving, I became the assembly chief, responsible for construction of all substation steel components and prep for shipment to job sites. Skills learned and used included blueprint reading, forklift operation, dropping trailers on the yard for loading, large table band-saw operation and management of one to two helpers.
