The Cleaning Taskforce took up the challenge to improve working conditions for cleaning operatives across the cleaning industry and improved the working lives of thousands of individuals and, most importantly, created practices which other organisations can learn from and implement.The Taskforce sought to address some of the problems that cleaning operatives described and which the Equality & Human Rights Commission set out in its report, The Invisible Workforce. In particular, it aimed to improve working conditions for cleaning operatives across the cleaning industry by:- encouraging the respectful treatment of cleaning operatives;- promoting compliance with employment law and improving workers’ understanding of employment rights; and - improving the impact of public and private sector procurement of cleaning services on employment conditions in the sectorThe taskforce produced posters to promote respectful treatment of cleaning operatives, guidance for managers and workers about employment rights, and responsible procurement principles to guide public and private sector client organisations that buy in cleaning services. Taskforce members committed to promoting these products in the sector to improve employment standards in the industry and to share good practice.The work of the taskforce has contributed to improving awareness of employment rights and employment practices in the industry. Since the launch of the taskforce products, the EHRC has shared platforms with taskforce members at conferences across Britain to promote the resources to the industry. The trade press reported widely on its work, and the EHRC website about the campaign was visited nearly 8,000 times. Taskforce members have used the products in their own workplace policies and practices to great effect. Importantly cleaning sector trade bodies have integrated taskforce products into their own industry wide programmes maximising the impact of the work.
