Principal EngineerT-Mobile Mar 2000 - Mar 2004Bellevue, Wa, UsAfter aircraft I wanted to get into something more fast moving, so decided to work in mobile with One2One.Working in the engineering team I joined just as SMS was taking everyone by surprise and saw the launch of GPRS, WAP, MMS and 3G, as well the struggle to change from a voice driven industry to an internet driven one. Yet again I was fortunate to join a team that was committed to getting things done, bringing new services to market in the most pragmatic way possible. We tended to build ourselves in the early stages, but to leverage off the shelf products where appropriate as the services matured. A specialty of the team was to combine existing enablers to create new services. We were able to do this as we had a set of skills and abilities that are now recognisable as agile/lean including small highly skilled teams working across every phase of the delivery (no-silos!), using high level languages such as Erlang and Python to build quickly and leveraging open APIs such as LDAP for ease of re-use.I worked across MMS, Mobile Email, Unified Messaging, as well as the experiments as making the Mobile Operator the portal to the internet.Specific projects delivered included· Prototyping, architecting, delivery & migration of Mobile Email service from a loss making proprietary product to an open source based system· Design & delivery of MMS inter-working solution supporting Mobile Number Portability & Virtual Mobile Network Operators using open source components such as Exim.· Architecting, coding & delivering an MMS content delivery system using Python & LAMP, with the first iterations built using Exim and a bash script.· Creating a Detailed Design Template to be used in new projects· Analysing system availability to show that most outages were due to scheduled Firewall changes -

Systems EngineerNational Air Traffic Services May 1998 - Feb 2000Fareham, Hants, GbAfter aircraft I decided to work on the systems that helped keep them in the air. I spent two years working in the system design authority for the Radio Systems that keep Air Traffic Controllers in contact with the aircraft that they manage. I worked on international standards with ETSI, re-wrote the design documentation which included validating the existing design rules from first principles, and proposed a new top-down approach to ensuring that the system designs met the safety requirements required in Air Traffic Control safety cases. I also proved that the communication systems wouldn't crash due to Y2K. -
Lead Computational Electromagnetics EngineerBaesystems Sep 1993 - May 1998London, GbLooking back twenty years later this is still the most Agile & Lean place I have ever worked. Working as a small high-tech consultancy we used cutting edge technology to solve emerging problems quicker and cheaper than previously possible. Answering questions such as, if my new plane design gets hit by lightning can it still fly, how far away can it be seen by radar and how do I stop the electronic warfare equipment interfering with the emergency radio. On my first day I found a copy of Peopleware on someone's desk, discovered the department functioned as a 'technical adhocracy', that we wrote all our own procedures & processes which were actually used, had continuous feedback in place (every report I and everyone else in the department wrote got scored). Everyone was multi-skilled/trained across all the areas though we each had a specialty, and we did a review/retrospective after every project. This gave a can-do attitude across the team, my favourite example of which was when were night testing a new Eurofighter we moved it by hand instead of waiting 3 hours for the tractor. In my 5 years I presented papers at conferences, ran simulations using Cray super computers, hacked Fortran programmes using Vi and had my first introduction to the Gnu toolkit, as well bidding, winning and delivering research projects. And I completed a part time MSc too. -
Undergraduate ApprenticeBaesystems Aug 1989 - Sep 1993London, GbStraight after school I joined British Aerospace. The 4 year programme included a full time degree, a wide range of training courses, and work experience across all parts of the business including manufacturing, commercial, systems integration and R&D. I manufactured aircraft parts, did wind tunnel testing, estimated how much it would cost to build an airbase in Saudi Arabia and worked on amazing technology such as the Harrier, Tornado and Eurofighter.I learnt that with the right attitude you can quickly apply yourself to anything but that mastery takes continuous effort, and that delivering amazing things is about more than solving technology problems.
