About Mike Roberts

Mike Roberts is a Cloud architecture & DevOps consultant, specializing in Serverless and AWS at Symphonia. He possess expertise in agile methodologies, software development, agile project management, test driven development, java and 17 more skills. Colleagues describe him as "Many years ago while I was young in the trade, Mike was a great mentor to me. An expert at Agile methodology. Strong with "best practices." Mike would often pair program with me and taught me TDD from scratch. He refactored incrementally. He'd run his test cases. Refactor a bit a time, to ultimately get you to where you needed to be, then check-in his, "bits and bobs," as he would refer to them. He made it fun and informative. Mike was one of the instrumental influences of my career. This man can do it all. We worked together at Finetix writing Capital Market applications. He was my senior and mentor. Great personality, good teacher. Great team lead, if we had any issues with our sprints, Mike quickly addressed the issues and covered for the team. He'd fix it, teach the team how to prevent it and enhance their skillsets. And it would never happen again. He would find improvements for each sprint. Always delivered on time and within budget. He's incredibly skillful and technical. Strong in both C# and JAVA and an excellent manager and SCRUM master and a good friend.", "Mike brings a great deal of energy and creativity to problem solving. He's passionate about the practice of software engineering and adept at helping teams realize their potential. In 2006, he helped transition my team into the world of Continuous Integration/Build and Agile development practice. At the time, he knew little about electronic trading, but in 6 months, we delivered a full development environment and mission critical application to the trading desk. His technical, communication and leaderships skills made him an anchor in the team.", and "Mike is one of the most talented technical people in the IT industry today, and an exceptional individual on a personal level as well. He has always been held in high regard from all colleagues, and is a must have resource for any project."

Symphonia is a software consultancy specializing in AWS, and how it impacts engineering organizations. I started Symphonia in 2016 with my business partner John Chapin. My work primarily consists of AWS architecture, software development, and DevOps, from strategy with CTOs / VPs, to hands-on co-implementation with platform and product engineering teams. My work is appropriate for a wide range of industry sectors - I've worked with financial service organizations, hotel chains, established social network applications, and more.I have performed architecture reviews, cost management analyses (and follow-up execution), and AWS co-funded service PoCs. I have developed cross-organizational platforms to accelerate use of AWS higher level services by engineering organizations, and have provided “trusted advisor” capabilities to several ops teams.I have a particular specialism in Serverless technologies, having written the original “de facto” primer on Serverless on Martin Fowler’s site (https://martinfowler.com/articles/serverless.html), I co-authored O’Reilly’s first book on AWS Lambda (http://shop.oreilly.com/product/0636920178101.do), and have given several training courses on Serverless AWS technologies.Read more at https://www.symphonia.io/ and on our blog at https://blog.symphonia.io/

    Vp Engineering
Intent Media Inc. Jan 2014 - Jun 2016
    New York, New York, Us
Intent Media was an ad-tech company specializing in travel commerce sites.I started at IM in January 2014 as a contractor developer on the data engineering team, using Java and Clojure as primary languages. In June 2014 I became co-interim CTO, responsible for delivery and people management. At this time IM’s technology team had grown rapidly to more than 40 people. I led the group through the next 10 months building delivery and management capabilities, while spearheading recruiting, and working with the CEO to find a full-time CTO.In April 2015 we identified a CTO - my role switched to VP, Engineering. I took ownership of several tech teams including data engineering, analysis & reporting systems, and our Property Price Ads product. I performed delivery and technical assurance for these teams, and I also provided team members with the support to do the best and most satisfying jobs they could. As a VP I was also a member of the company’s executive team. One initiative I took on in this context was to create definitions for positions and roles across the tech org, along with a set of ‘career ladders’. I executed the roll-out of this effort including education of the organization, and transition to a new set of titles and levels for tech team members. This was used in yearly reviews and led to significant improvements across various career-oriented metrics in our company surveys. (see https://mikebroberts.com/2016/05/19/the-intent-media-engineering-ladders/)In my final few months I took executive ownership for technical operations, working with the head of tech ops. A big thrust of my work was in Amazon Web Services (AWS) cost management, including working with various teams to reduce monthly costs by nearly 50%. While cutting the costs was a huge improvement in the immediate I also implemented several tools and processes to make sure costs continued to be well managed into the future.

  • Drw Trading Group
Senior Software Engineer / Team Lead
Drw Trading Group Oct 2008 - Jun 2012
    Chicago, Il, Us
At DRW I was the manager and lead developer of a team delivering trading applications to commodities desks in New York and Chicago. I was the founding member of the team and we had grown to five people by the time I left.Technology-wise our apps were a mix of Java, Clojure and C#. Our applications ran 24 x 5 with an excellent operational record. The applications feature-wise were a mixture of regular electronic market futures trading (market visibility + trade execution) but also included a good amount of more sophisticated behavior including low-latency automated trade execution and integration with technology from other teams. My role was mostly hands-on - coding, architecture, support. We ran a light process / team though so I was also product manager, delivery lead and technical lead. The remainder of my time was spent as people manager to the rest of the team. I reported to the head of software engineering. We were very much a 'DevOps' + agile team - we took what we had learned over the previous decade to produce a lightweight yet very high performing group.
