I have extensive experience understanding users and helping product teams make informed, human-centered decisions about how best to serve them with confidence and conviction. I do this by:- Making: building tools, visualizations, and prototypes to help stakeholders understand an opportunity space, and democratizing research- Bridging: bringing together cross-functional partners to make sense of people's needs and imagine their route forward, and collaborating with people from other disciplines to triangulate deeper understanding.- Scaling: building robust, replicable research practices to get richer, more inclusive pictures of human needs and behaviors.I apply mixed-methods HCI techniques to user experience research, combining large-scale data analysis and machine learning with analytics, unmoderated studies, in-depth interviews and user studies. I've published work at selective conferences, and academic and business literature has cited my papers over 1000 times.I enjoy mentoring and guiding junior researchers to help them reach their potential. I led a research team at Google and mentored interns and research associates to become successful full-time researchers and get promoted. And I've taught well-received classes at Google in research ethics and statistics to elevate the craft of UXR.I promote a culture of "data as deliverable", making real stories and data from user research widely accessible to help scale user empathy and empower teams to make decisions. The Daily Information Needs study I led gathered over 214,000 stories from over 6000 people, and is among the top 10% most widely-used data assets at Google.
