He founded his first company in high school, and dropped out of Carnegie Mellon to become a full-time entrepreneur. Since then, Mike has built and sold three startup companies. Splunk consolidated all of our Release Engineering, Engineering Productivity, Performance Engineering and QA teams into a single Engineering Infrastructure area, which consisted of over 100 engineers in San Francisco, Seattle and Shanghai. I was asked to lead the team as Area Technology Owner (ATO), a role similar to APO in the LeSS model while being more technically oriented.At the time, most testing for Splunk Enterprise was deferred until the very end of each 6-month release cycle, and a release criterion was "no more open bugs than the last release" (which numbered in the thousands). I focused primarily on consolidating and modernizing our tooling and infrastructure to iron out flakiness and reduce the amount of manual work that was required to release software. I wanted to enable more engineers to run more tests, more frequently, earlier in the cycles.We have since raised the bar to a 100% pass rate for every merge to develop. This uses a "golden" suite of tens of thousands of tests that run against thousands of Splunk Enterprise deployments. Today, ORCA and the containerized test infrastructure we built have become ubiquitous at Splunk, now spanning across thousands of servers.

Following the launch of Splunk Stream, I became head of Architecture and Performance for our Applications Engineering department. I recognized that we faced huge challenges with testing Splunk products. We never had enough servers and it involved a lot of manual work to set up clusters, making it very easy to make mistakes. It could take as much as a week just to run a single performance test, which greatly inhibited Splunk's ability to scale our products.I collaborated with our head of QA to solve this problem. Early on, we recognized the efficiency and consistency benefits that came from using Docker containers. We kicked off a new project called ORCA that established a common test framework for Splunk, and secured funding to build containerized test infrastructure with 100 new servers. This enabled us to spin up large scale performance tests in minutes, which previously took several days. Most of the work behind ORCA has since been merged into open source projects used to build the official containers for Splunk Enterprise.

Its lead product, the BeatBox® web optimization appliance, passively tapped into computer networks to collect, cleanse, analyze, and deliver real-time click-stream information. In simpler terms, the BeatBox product was a piece of hardware loaded with unique, proprietary software that was installed on customer server racks and both monitored and recorded customers’ web traffic. The product provided these owners of web sites with extensive data on how users interacted with their sites – where users went on the site, what information they sought, and where they had problems (filled shopping carts that were never purchased, etc.). The product provided detailed and aggregate data on thousands or millions of user sessions and also provided the ability to replay each individual session. Companies operating web sites with large numbers of visitors found this product to be particularly valuable in understanding how to improve and optimize their web presences.BeatBox Technologies was formerly known as "ClickCadence."
