Provided wireless communications service in the US until becoming AT&T Mobility in 2007.]With Verizon emerging as the only national brand in the market, Bellsouth and Southwestern Bell realized that, to stop losing market share to Verizon, they needed to merge their various regional companies into one national brand, Cingular, to better compete with Verizon and other ensuing national brands.Played a lead role in merging 14 regional companies (and cultures) into one distinct, nationally recognized brand – crafting strategic vision, messaging and positioning, and marketing direction for the then second largest wireless carrier in the US ($15B in revenue and 29,000 employees). Directed all market research, which drove customer insights and segmentation, consumer and corporate marketing strategies, product development and management, and pricing efforts. Led cross-functional teams in executing all marketing initiatives and achieving revenue, profit and market share targets.- Introduced Rollover Minutes on a national platform - increased customer satisfaction by 21 basis points over those without Rollover Minutes. Reduced customer churn by 18%, resulting in $235M in annual revenues saved.- Developed company’s new product innovation and new product development stage-gate process after best practicing all of the leading innovators in the US across industries.- Performed in-depth analysis and worked with other parent subsidiaries to launch combined bundles of wireless, landline and internet services to reduce churn and increase perceived value. [Provider of telecommunications and broadband services in the US – acquired by AT&T in 2006.]With messaging representing a substantial income stream, company recognized it needed to invest and innovate in this arena. Saw an opportunity to do so by creating one single mailbox that could be accessed from anywhere – something that, at the time, was a huge undertaking.Held general management oversight, and directed all messaging initiatives for BellSouth, from crafting strategy; to directing R&D and defining standards and requirements; to overseeing product development and management in designing an open-source, common messaging platform; to building and nurturing strategic partnerships to create solutions; and managing full P&L of $1B.- Transformed legacy messaging platforms to offer unified messaging for the consumer to combine Home, Work and Cell phone Voicemails as well as Faxes into a single mailbox that could be accessed from any phone or from any email.- Served as founding member of the Telemessaging Industry Association that created common standards by which all messaging vendors and carrier providers could launch unified messaging. (Previously, messaging vendors held proprietary standards unique to their platform versus an open platform environment able to communicate with other vendor platforms.)

Louisville, Kentucky Area

With growth stagnating and new players rapidly entering the regional market, company needed to figure out how to boost performance and regain market share in the midst of heavy competition.Held full P&L oversight and performed CEO-level responsibilities for BellSouth Mobility’s $300M decentralized business in KY and IN, including designing overall growth strategy; overseeing marketing, pricing and promotions; managing customer service center and retail sales; and directing network engineering, operations and HR. Led organizational effort to strategically position the company as a premium provider, while facing intense price and distribution competition.- Led company in net income and expense/subscriber metrics, while also exceeding sales growth targets.- Grew revenues from $110M to over $300M, with half the growth coming organically (34% annual growth) and the remainder coming from acquisitions.- Received the “Best of the Best” award for best customer service company-wide.- Created and launched a leadership development program for region, patterned after the “Leadership Atlanta” program, that was adopted company-wide and reduced employee turnover in the “regrettable losses” category for this group by 38% annually.- Successfully managed diverse cultural integration related to BellSouth Mobility’s acquisition of Chicago-based US Cellular markets – resulting in top performing region in almost every category, improved net income performance, reduced expense per subscriber, increased customer and employee satisfaction (morale).

Lived and Worked in Brussells, Belgium and Duesseldorf, Germany to assist in the build-out of BellSouth's new wireless companies, partnering with local national companies. Responsibilities included development of a national sales strategy, pricing, compensation structure and policy, negotiating and securing national distribution, point of sales materials, sales training development, sales budgets and tracking, as well as incentive and promotional programs. Also learned a new foreign language and was able to be successful in working in the German language work environment. Developed an understanding of how to live and work in culturally diverse environments and how to yield majority influence while holding only a minority investment stake in the business. BellSouth was a minority partner in the Sonofon and E-Plus wireless companies.
