“Who in the #&*% drew these?” the press-brake operator yelled as he threw a handful of drawings up in the air. I had just rounded the corner and stood there waiting for these pages to float to the floor before me. The ones that landed faceup, I could see, were mine! We looked at each other; I announced ownership of the now-grounded sheets, and we both started picking them up, silent until we had them all in hand. I then asked what I needed to do to fix them. I was only a few months into my first design job 30 years ago, but the lesson of asking early questions stuck.Thousands of questions and parts later, the importance of assessing the needs of all those involved in the product continues to hold. I strive to distill the critical knowledge of stakeholders — from customers and manufacturers to prototype builders, service providers, and the purchasing team — into safe, robust, and profitable products.
