About Mike Duncan
At first glance it might be difficult to find any coherent pattern to my career progression - I haven't focused on a single industry and my career decisions haven't been based on financial gain - but the connections are there, even if I do have to join the dots for people to see them. At the age of 30, I left a managerial position at the Federation of Small Businesses and put much of my life savings into starting my own business. At the same time, my wife (ever supportive) was expecting our first child. A challenging set of circumstances. My Speyside whisky tour company was a success: I made more money than I put in and I got great feedback from 100% of my customers. Yet with tourism, the winter months can be challenging. When I closed the business four years later I had learned a lot, but I had a smile on my face as I removed the self- and simply became "employed". My wife (and daughter) were smiling, too! From June 2015, I started making Scotch whisky instead of just talking about it. I was passionate about my work, being part of small, dedicated and experienced teams working in two privately owned Speyside distilleries: Ballindalloch and The GlenAllachie.Throughout my 10+ years in the whisky industry, I always kept a keen eye on my old job back at FSB. In August 2022, I made a bold step in applying for, and regaining, the position of Development Manager for FSB in Scotland. As I type, it’s the end of Day 1. Fair to say that I’m not planning on updating this profile again for a very long time!
