Michael is a successful multi-award winning scientist, teacher, and STEM education lecturer, having worked as a writer, consultant, & digital technologies specialist with experience in curriculum design, AI in education, science communication, education research, and courseware development. Michael is an expert user of Apple, Google, and Microsoft products for teaching (eg, Google Workspace and MS Teams) in schools at all levels. Michael also works with ITO's and PTE's to design and write courses, assessments and carry out moderation processes to meet external auditing and review requirements. For many years Michael led the design and delivery of Mathematics and Science education professional development programmes delivered to teachers throughout New Zealand. Achievements include being awarded (as leader of a team) a 2015 Prime Minister’s Education Excellence award for Excellence in Leadership (Mathematics and Science education professional development), the 2014 DEANZ eLearning Excellence Award, and a 2017 New Zealander of the Year Local Hero Medal for his services to education. His research as a Ministry of Education eLearning Fellow in 2008 won him a Microsoft Innovative Teacher award for his wearable games & electronics link (RIGEL), culminating in Michael representing New Zealand at the 2009 Asia Pacific Microsoft Innovative Teachers conference in Kuala Lumpur.Michael has worked in research & industry, and has been leading teaching in the primary, secondary and tertiary education sectors. Taking a holistic and complimentary view of the sciences and technology, Michael is an expert educator across many disciplines including biology, chemistry, physics, calculus, coding/programming and robotics. Michael is co-Director of Focus Consultancy, doing online courseware design and development (Moodle and iQualify), and mentoring educators.As a science communicator & writer Michael builds interactive props from TV/ movies, including a TARDIS and a Dalek. Michael has shared his ideas via conference keynote presentations, media articles, radio and television features.As a future-focused educator, he founded & ran New Zealand's only High School-based research laboratory with Dr Sir William Pickering, former Director of JPL (NASA) as Patron. Ahead of its time, this foreshadowed Design Thinking and the Maker movement.
