Out walking my dog early this morning and I came up with this way to describe my career philosophy.1. Generalist: I studied many fields in computer science and out. Occasionally, I take long deep dives into topics like the online information environment and the propagation of information. These deep dives I pop back out of after a few years and then resume my generalist directions.2. People first: I was drawn to human computer interaction research in grad school because people ultimately use the technology we build, and working to make the world better/safer necessarily means you must put people first. Not AI.3. Explain simply: I follow the Feynman ideas that to really understand something you should be able to explain it at its highest level, simply, and to a person that doesn't have your expertise. This is invaluable for communication and step 2. It also makes your understanding deeper because this is not easy to do.I started programming computers on a TI-86 back sometime before 1986. Basic. Then pascal. It was fun and natural to me but by far not the only subject I was interested in.More on me:I remain interested in the intersection of hard research, people focused systems, and the teams that bring it all together. I remain interested in the next challenges and where my career arc goes from here.
