About Mike Gerrard, P.Eng.

I define myself as a “technology catalyst,” as I have the project management, technical, and leadership skills to drive major projects from concept to completion.I am began a new year in 2021 with a new venture; applying my professional experience of over a quarter century to focus on my passion - Cleantech. I founded a new company called ElectroGeneSys. We support the establishment and management of Distributed Energy Resources, or DERs.As a former executive at Belanger Engineering, I gained experience working on a variety of related building projects: EV charging systems, electricity consumption analyses, hydro service upgrades, lighting retrofits, electrical PM plans and emergency power systems for life safety. Belanger was a hotbed of learning for me - retrofit construction projects for buildings of all types. Layering this with my telecom process and systems experience, I'm fully prepared for my new venture in sustainable energy systems. My passion is to empower my people to achieve corporate mission, solve challenges and evolve. Continuous improvement is a hallmark of engineering. Enabling technological advancements for the betterment of society, particularly in these challenging times is critical.I worked in telecom most of my career: network planning and engineering, provisioning process, design standards, business systems and tool development while providing in-depth analyses and presenting business cases. One of my greatest strengths is analyzing and improving workflows. I view each process holistically, then design the tools, train staff, implement systems, and manage results. I consistently develop solutions that would not be readily apparent to many.As a leader, I believe in finding team synergies to meet all corporate goals in the most efficient and effective manners possible. A cornerstone of my reputation is that I do not allow my team to compromise results. My leadership skills were tested when I led efforts to create an innovative national provisioning repository to share information and aggressively design and build next gen wireless networks on time and budget for Telus. And now I look forward to playing a key role in our evolving world that embraces sustainable energy to improve our environment, services and quality of life.Outside of work, my interests include camping, hiking, kayaking, snorkeling, skiing, swimming and tennis with family and friends. I also find balance through music; playing and composing on keyboard and dancing with my beautiful wife.

I enjoyed contributing to internal process improvements, team synergies and corporate growth, including:▶ Tripling department size since joining, establishing team hierarchy in both disciplines.▶ Doubling annual mechanical services revenue in 2019 by proactively marketing to targeted clients.
  • Telus Communications
Mobile Broadband Network Core Engineering Consultant
    Telus Communications Jan 2013 - Nov 2016
    Vancouver, Bc, Ca
I have held a variety of consulting roles with TELUS since 2002, all of which have capitalized on my extensive project management strengths, technical expertise, and leadership skills. I served as a consultant for the company’s Mobile Broadband Network Core Engineering unit, which involved collaborating with transmission planners, RAN engineers, and project managers to design connections to cell sites for coverage/capacity of HSPA and LTE wireless networks. I audited and submitted removal orders to decommission old network technologies, review national process, and updated provisioning tools to accommodate new technology rollouts. I also updated models in the circuit inventory database to accurately capture new technologies. ▶ By auditing circuits and issuing removal requests for rapid Eastern network decommissioning in 2014, I was able to help save the company more than $2.5M annually.▶ In an effort to shorten project timelines and open the lines of communication among everyone involved in projects, I refined the SHARP tool I had previously created—a national process for provisioning new wireless services including HSPA, LTE, and Wi-Fi.▶ I delivered network expansion designs in support of the network build in Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec.
  • Telus Communications
    Transport Engineering Consultant
    Telus Communications 2008 - 2012
    Vancouver, Bc, Ca
I drove information-sharing and process-refinement efforts with 19 departments across five regions, adapting network technologies and testing procedures for the launch of a national network provisioning tool (SHARP) and next-generation UMTS/HSPA wireless network. I collaborated with technology strategy, transmission planning, and RAN engineering to develop new equipment and circuit models and assignment standards for each cell site build. As the Wireless Transmission liaison to all resource deployment plans and capital project requests, I made sure new systems would work within my group. ▶ The comprehensive network operations process model I developed alongside network provisioning teams in both the Wireline and Wireless divisions provide seamless nationwide planning, design, provisioning, build, and monitoring. ▶ I built an innovative provisioning repository tool—which I named SHARP—in 2009; I then played a key role in applying it to the new 3G UMTS/HSPA wireless network. In 2012, I revised the tool in support of the launch of 4G LTE.
  • Telus Mobility
    Business Systems Analyst Consultant
    Telus Mobility 2004 - 2008
    Vancouver, British Columbia, Ca
TELUS Mobility is Canada’s second-largest cell phone provider. I worked with the Network Support Systems team in Corporate Engineering to develop tools used for planning, designing, provisioning, and building the network. I surveyed user needs and researched industry standards to develop comprehensive guidelines for modeling, naming, and capturing network inventory.▶ I researched, documented, and led the upgrade of the in-house legacy circuit management system that had been built on the ARS platform, TEMS. I followed strict IT functional requirements for documentation and change management protocols to upgrade the live system and provide enhancements. ▶ I published a 168-page network inventory standards guide called “Network Element & Circuit Naming Rules—Rules for Consistent Defining, Naming, and Describing Network Elements and Circuits at Telus Mobility.” The guide provided a tool for accurate and efficient inventory control. ▶ The network operations provisioning process model I developed documents roles and responsibilities, as well as determined inputs, outputs, and durations of each activity. ▶ I upgraded the CircuitVision system in BC, which included converting four million records, developing the business case to purchase enterprise Sun servers and Oracle databases, and negotiating with the software vendor. I then expanded CircuitVision to Eastern Canada by consolidating thousands of circuits and related transmission equipment onto a single system. CircuitVision is still used today as the principal wireless circuit inventory source.
  • Telus Mobility
    Transmission Engineering Consultant
    Telus Mobility 2002 - 2003
    Vancouver, British Columbia, Ca
I prepared RFPs and negotiated with vendors for multimillion-dollar digital access cross-connect switch system (DACS) equipment purchase, identifying the most cost-effective and future-friendly solution. ▶ By auditing the circuits of the Durham Region Police Services, I was able to ensure more reliable support of their iDEN (Mike) network. ▶ When TELUS launched an initiative to move away from leasing circuits, I developed MW circuit and equipment naming standards to support the company’s national build. My efforts created a circuit management system (NetMGR)—a MS Access database that deployed MW circuits in Eastern Canada to meet an aggressive transport build program. ▶ In a cost-saving measure, I established a new vendor relationship that allowed TELUS to purchase the most up-to-date switching equipment at the best price, saving the company $250k for the national DACS implementation.
  • Telus Mobility
    Transmission Engineering Manager
    Telus Mobility 2000 - 2002
    Vancouver, British Columbia, Ca
My first role with TELUS involved leading the design and support for the installation and operation of transmission equipment to expand wireless networks including backbone, last mile transmission to cell sites, and trunk circuits for voice traffic connections to switches. I chaired cross-functional team meetings to optimize network costs and manage all transmission changes. ▶ I standardized the new model of echo canceller for maximum voice quality; I also negotiated for the lowest price among major suppliers. ▶ One of the major projects I was involved in during this time period was a national project to upgrade 911 services to E911, which ensured greater public safety services.
  • Riptide Networks
    Engineering Manager
    Riptide Networks 2000 - 2000
Riptide was a start-up niche internet service provider for small businesses. As Engineering Manager, I led all network engineering management efforts including wire centre co-location design and deployment of access connections to client sites for high-speed Internet service over DSL.
