Mike Gordon is Founder and currently serves as Chief Strategy Officer of Joule Assets, Inc. doing business as Joule Community Power. Joule empowers its municipal clients through helping them to exercise their authority to opt residents into clean energy contracts. This further enables municipalities to distribute community solar credits to all residents, for 25 years, with priority to low-income residents. In parallel, the firm issues RFPs to developers, identifying municipal or private sector property on which the owner wants a local solar power plant or storage facility.Municipal authority also enables Joule clients to reduce customer acquisition and replacement costs for community solar and community storage developers, helping more projects to hurdle financial lines that allow these clean energy projects to be built.Mike has historically played a central role in founding industries in the energy field. He has particularly focused on building clean energy markets and products, and on consumer empowerment in all energy markets.Mike founded ConsumerPowerline in New York, in mid-2000, generally recognized as the nation's first demand response aggregator. Specializing in serving end users in deregulated wholesale electricity markets, ConsumerPowerline (later "CPower") built 1,000 MWs of demand response globally and until it's sale in October 2010 to Constellation Energy Group, remained the largest provider of short notice (response within ten minutes of call) demand response in the world. It was not Mike's first foray into the field. In 1981, Mike took a job as sole employee of a 127 home heating oil collective, that had negotiated an advantageous "collective buying" contract with a heating oil supplier in NYC, modeled after a similar contract in Ottawa Canada. Fueled by the energy crisis, consumer advocacy, and media attention, three years later the collective served three thousand homes and seven heating oil suppliers. Over the next year Mike negotiated "first of their kind" collective buying contracts for consumer groups in D.C., MD, NJ, NY, and MA. Today, heating oil collectives serve a major portion of the eastern residential market, saving consumers hundreds of millions of dollars each year. Between this book-end of energy innovations, Mike built anti-bias and critical thinking curricula in three-hundred schools, through a non-profit he founded: Innovative Community Enterprises.
