About Mike Halsema

Over my 25-year career in healthcare, I've witnessed remarkable advancements in technology that have significantly enhanced the lives of both patients and healthcare professionals. Recognizing the ongoing need for increased efficiency, I founded Med Practice Insights to further contribute to the evolution of healthcare through innovative solutions. I began my career as a front-line Hospital Corpsman in the Navy, serving as a medic to an infantry platoon. In an era before electronic health records, I witnessed the challenges of paper-based record-keeping, leading me to recognize the potential of technology to enhance healthcare efficiency.Post-Navy, I worked in an orthopedic clinic where a rudimentary EHR system marked a significant improvement over paper charting. Simultaneously pursuing a degree in computer information systems, I became passionate about working with EHRs.Joining a large healthcare system in its early stages of transitioning to a unified Epic EHR, I played a key role in designing workflows for primary care and specialties. The implementation empowered improved population health management through consolidated notes and discrete data. After the successful ambulatory Epic implementation, I became the clinical lead for extending the program to independent physician partners. This role allowed me to understand the unique needs of independent clinics and inspired the concept of Med Practice Insights, aiming to bridge the gap between IT, EHRs, and operations for practice optimization. As the Director of IT for a specialty medical practice, I managed their Epic implementation, providing expertise in optimizing workflow, setting up new lines of business, and offering reporting and analytics for informed decision-making. This experience solidified my belief in leveraging analytics for improved patient care and business decisions.Motivated to deepen my data focus, I pursued a Master of Science in Business Analytics at Georgetown University. This program equipped me with insights from various industries, inspiring a renewed commitment to bring much-needed support to private medical organizations through data and existing technology.I am enthusiastic about launching Med Practice Insights. Drawing on a diverse career journeyโ€”from battlefield medic to technology leaderโ€”I aim to offer unique expertise in clinic operations, technology, and data analytics to independent medical clinics and organizations. My goal is to help healthcare practices work more efficiently and make informed decisions in the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare.
