For very many years, my name and that of Amalgam have been more or less synonymous. Amalgam has become a well-known leader in the model making field and in the creative industries more generally. I am proud to have been involved in the company for almost thirty of those years, and in the model making business overall since 1978. Starting as a freelance maker producing boardroom models for the merchant marine, motorsport and defence industries, then expanding into large scale educational and functional testing models for a wide range of clients. Within Amalgam I developed firstly architectural model making skills then moved sideways into product model making, prototyping, exhibition design and build, project management and finally company directorship. Amalgam has, therefore, been central to most of my career, I became an early adopter and keen promoter of 3D printing, in particular, using it to produce master models for resin vacuum casting, a process which Amalgam specialises in. As a natural extension to this I also became familiar with and adept at using a range of 3D CAD software.As Amalgam grew and developed over the years, I developed a range of administrative and management skills not to mention becoming reasonably adept at marketing, networking and social media, all of which, from necessity, sharpened up my writing, graphics and photographic abilities. 2020 was a year of many changes, not least, for me at least, it marked my decision to step down from my role at Amalgam and effectively retire. I hope that through the many contacts I have made in person and through LinkedIn over the years, I will be able to keep in touch with the industry and still play a role in promoting the wealth of creative talent in the South West UK. In particular I am staying involved in The Product Partnership, a Not For Profit limited company that aims to assist start-up companies, SMEs and scale-ups with their product development journey. I am also honoured to have been made an Honorary Industrial Fellow at the Department at Mechanical Engineering in the University of Bristol DMF lab.
