Technical lead and key contributor to the team implementing AOL Communicator, a suite of applications designed to offer an alternative to the “all-in-one” AOL client for advanced broadband users. Responsible for developing database (Berkeley DB) and IPC components for both the Windows and Macintosh OS X versions of the Calendar, Address Book, IM, and Mail applications. Developed core UI components shared by all Communicator applications. Lead engineer for the team that delivered a cross platform library providing Communicator applications with access to data on the AOL Calendar Server. Source code was written in C, C++, Objective C, and Java; Calendar-specific code is based on the iCal (RFC 2445) standard.

Provide technical leadership to the team responsible for creating, shipping, and maintaining Excite@Home’s first retail software product, @Home Quick Start Kit. This product allowed subscribers to “self install” a broadband cable modem in their home or office by providing network configuration and technical support functionality within a user interface designed for the non-technical user. Responsible for designing a software architecture utilizing cross-platform UI frameworks and OS-specific libraries, developed in-house, providing SNMP diagnostics, HTTP/SMTP/POP/DHCP protocol support, and Ethernet/ISP/Internet network configuration services. Implemented all network and low-level OS support libraries for Macintosh OS X and Microsoft Windows products.

Sun Labs: Developed software components for an experimental SOHO server product, including an embedded web, mail, and FAX server written in Java. Created the first user-configurable Look and Feel class library for Swing, as well as tools based on this UI library to create custom desktop applications for administering this server. Later assumed responsibility for designing a JME-based HTML parsing and rendering engine for use in cell phones and PDAs.JavaSoft: As a member of the Java Human Interface team, developed new core AWT, Swing, and Toolkit classes (along with the underlying native Peer code) for JSE 1.4. Presented new Java UI initiatives as a featured speaker representing Sun at JavaOne 1999.

Architect and lead engineer for a new Internet Explorer rendering engine written in Java. Responsible for implementing this architecture as a set of components providing video, audio, and animation capabilities. Developed the project’s rendering engine and associated document architecture. After this project was canceled, assumed a role on the team developing the Java AWT class libraries for Macintosh Internet Explorer 4.0. Designed and implemented the Java-based components and native AWT Peers required to support Microsoft's Macintosh Java Virtual Machine.

Design, implement, and maintain Adobe PageMaker’s RosettaStone Connectivity library, an object-oriented software layer enabling PageMaker to import and export content in formats used by third-party applications. This cross-platform library, implemented in C++, provided an intra-application API for translating, reading, and writing data to disk. The Connectivity library also provided a public API (supported by a developer SDK) for third-party vendors wishing to extend PageMaker’s import/export capabilities.
