The year was 2008. I believe I was enjoying a prime rib at my sisters' wedding when a friend of my newly minted brother-in-law asked me if I wanted to make some cash. The offer involved driving around to different mountain towns and selling ski masks. I was couch surfing at the time, fresh in LA after my graduation from Syracuse University with a bachelors of Industrial Design and a secret passion for creating brands. While that did sound kinda fun, I had to say no, I was not interested. I was eager to start some kind of career - so I instead offered to build him a brand through which he could sell his stuff more effectively. Several conversations later we decided to create what would become Outdoor Tech. The brand started modestly with a face mask product we dubbed 'The Yowie' named after the Australian bipedal hominid of the same name. Slowly we innovated and evolved into a tech pioneer for the Action Sports industry. During my five year stint as the Creative Director and Head of Design, I had the opportunity to manage production and travel overseas while creating every detail of the brand. The template for branding, copy, content, product, and packaging design I created for Outdoor Tech is still closely adhered to today.
