About Michael Lorant

I have spent my entire career working within the IT space. My passion however is working with UNIX systems, especially the automation of building complex environments. Infrastructure as code is the objective for all the systems I am involved with and do not believe in manual processes. I am a firm believer that DevOps is the future and am embracing the methodology. With over 20 years of experience working with many different UNIX flavours, I feel I have a strong understanding of what is expected and required of a systems engineer. The complexities of creating and managing large high availability clusters is something I am very comfortable with.I consider myself an expert when it comes to troubleshooting problems and always enjoy the challenge of understanding how a system works. The problems I solve drive me to create better solutions without the issues I have identified. My focus is towards modern technology and design which includes cloud (AWS), automation (Puppet) and coding (Ruby) backed by UNIX (Linux). I love building applications that use external APIs and provide self service interfaces to handle frequent tasks required for both the team I work in or other business units.I strive to push the boundaries of what a UNIX system engineer should be doing and quite often end up working in the development space. I have experience building web applications. These are applications that embrace the frontend / backend design communicating over a RESTful API. I have taught myself Ruby, Rails, JavaScript and AngularJS and this creates limitless opportunities in the systems I build.I am extremely enthusiastic about technology and challenging myself and those around me to create better systems. I spent much of my own time teaching myself new skills which often helps me come up with creative solutions in my job.

Michael Lorant Work Experience Details
  • Fairfax Media
    Senior Systems Engineer
Fairfax Media May 2012 - Present
My responsibilities at Fairfax Media involve the operation of their publicly visible sites and supporting systems. These are the mastheads (SMH & The Age) as well as the classified and transactional sites (Domain, MyCareer, Drive, RSVP and Stayz). I am also actively involved in the maintenance of the mobile products (iPad application for mastheads and AFR). I understand the issues involved with building for scale and keeping the systems secure. The product technologies that I am involved with daily are: Linux, Apache & Nginx, Puppet, Varnish, Ruby and BIND.I have very competent skills with nearly all Amazon Web Services (AWS) products, including EC2, RDS, S3, Route53 and CloudFormation. I have solely built the infrastructure for a some smaller sites (Ultimate Footy, AgTrader and MarketBase) which are also fully Puppetised and built modularly for extendability. My most recent systems are autoscaling and take advantage of all the monitoring features of CloudWatch.I also am involved in maintaining and adding systems to the Akamai CDN (which I am fully trained in) as well as maintaining the DNS systems for over 800+ zones.I am a capable PHP developer and all my recent deployment systems are written in Ruby. I have some basic experience with creating Ruby on Rails but am familiar with frameworks in general. I have an understanding on how to build sites taking advantage of AJAX to create a modern web experience and do have experience with frontend development using Javascript and JQuery. All of my AWS tools are written using the AWS-SDK gem and interact using their public API.In the simplest terms: I know Linux, Puppet, Ruby and AWS as these are what I spend the majority of my day (and night) working with.
  • Self-Employed
    Systems Engineer
    Self-Employed Jan 2006 - May 2013
Over the last few years I have been involved in freelance contracting with customers I have met from my previous employments. Due to my diverse computing knowledge I have been involved in installation and troubleshooting for a number of small companies. I have also had a few larger companies I have been involved with that I have had a more specialised role (network troubleshooting and antivirus system maintenance).
  • Sonnet
    Network Engineer
    Sonnet Nov 2003 - Jan 2006
During my time at Sonnet Enterprise Services I acted as a subcontractor and was involved in a range of projects from system deployment to system and network troubleshooting. Contract lengths were up to 3 months with most being a few weeks and some as little as a few days depending on the work required. The majority of the contracts were on the Windows platform with a few involving Unix systems. Many of the smaller jobs involved network troubleshooting and were network critical issues that were impacting productivity. Diagnosis of multiple systems to identify where the faults occurred was a requirement for the role I fulfilled for them.I was usually brought in with minimal advance notice and most were highly urgent jobs requiring immediate commencement.
  • Sernet
    Network Engineer
    Sernet Jul 2003 - Nov 2003
I provided some contract services to Sernet. My role has been implementation of Microsoft solutions. Ihave been involved in migration of users and data from Windows NT to a newly designed Windows 2000 network (utilising Active Directory). This migration was for Yamaha Motors and the project wascompleted successfully and on time.
  • Dimension Data
    Network Engineer
    Dimension Data Nov 1996 - Mar 2002
My role at Com Tech Communications over the period that I worked there can be best broken down into 3 distinct groups. The reason for this was due to the changing business direction where the company move from being a distributor to an integrator.Initially I was involved in telephone support for operating systems (NetWare, Unix and Windows). I was also responsible for backup solutions (Arcserve), Internet security (Checkpoint Firewall-1) and server hardware. I was involved in this role for approximately 1.5 years.Once the company moved into the integration business, my role became an implementor of operating system solutions. This involved implementation and deployment for large organisations. Due to my wide ranged skill set I was mostly utilised in smaller ad-hoc projects which were under a week in length. I was also involved in network troubleshooting and auditing of networks. I was involved in this role for 1 year.It became apparent that one of my main strengths was troubleshooting of network problems. At this time Com Tech was utilising project engineers for troubleshooting and this was causing problems with resources. I was asked to form a troubleshooting group and became the initial engineer for the TSS (Technical Support Services) group. During this time I became skilled in troubleshooting networking issues across cross platform networks. I dealt mostly with Windows NT/2000 and NetWare 4.11/5.0 networks. I also was dealing with issues with Solaris, Linux, Unixware and SCO OpenServer. I was heavily involved in backup issues (Arcserve and Backup Exec) as well as some router work (Cisco and Nortel). I also have a strong Internet technology background and was involved in troubleshooting issues with customers Internet connectivity as well as security issues (Novell BorderManager, Cisco PIX and Checkpoint Firewall-1).
  • Force Technology
    Network Engineer
    Force Technology May 1996 - Nov 1996
My role at Force Technology was very broad. I was mostly involved in providing support for both theirinternal network as well as phone and onsite support for their customers. I was also involved indiagnosing and repairing equipment that they had sold to their customers (they were a distributor of alarge range of IT technologies). During the time I worked there I gained valuable experience that helpedstart my career.
