I was initially hired to reorganize and redesign the company's Angular-based single page web application. Within the first month I had improved testability, decoupled the technical design and deployment from the Python backend, and begun mentoring another through the continued reorganization and test-driven development process.By the second sprint I was in charge of integrating the distributed web service platform (the RESTful Django backend mentioned above) with the company's third-party ERP: a business process and management platform called Netsuite. The development process started with a team-approved data-flow architecture slide deck and ended with a working, 12-factor inspired, test-driven, horizontally scalable and fault tolerant solution. The realtime bidirectional data flow was made possible thanks to a Node daemon process, an AMQP message broker called RabbitMQ, and a couple Redis data store instances.

Super fun. This spin-off stealth SaaS startup provides artists with the tools to collaboratively create animated films online. Think: Github for filmmakers....and talk about full-stack engineering! Listed from cloud- to client-side, I've designed software for:1) automated server configuration and deployment, 2) internal data-crunching server processes, 3) user-facing web UI, 4) server-to-client and client-to-server streaming video, and5) client-side file-management and native application integration. That last item is pretty slick: Written using Google's GO language, the tool accesses a portion of the user's local Windows/Mac/Linux workstation, transferring files to and from the cloud. Sync status is displayed in realtime in the browser directly on the artella.com site, creating a seamless experience. Once available, a user can then open a shared file (again from the browser UI) in a native application like Autodesk's Maya or Adobe's Photoshop. Syncing and save-as-you-go functionality is then also accessible from inside the native app using python-based plug-ins. Once installed, a parent lifecycler process manages the download and installation of new releases; reloading only when the client is idle.Highlight: Meeting Ed Catmull, the president of Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios, when I was asked to answer his questions about the platform.

I was fortunate enough to get my hands into every part of the systems that make up Animation Mentor. That meant dealing with nasty, brittle legacy systems written in awkward proprietary languages but it also meant breaking ground with fresh new systems using exciting and opensource technologies.Highlight: building a film-quality render and media transcoder farm. Once checked into the film production grade content management system, animation and VFX students' work would be submitted to an autonomous, collection of servers which would render each frame in parallel on a different box. When all frames were rendered they were then compiled into a single mov file and then transcoded into various webready formats. As one of the first employees, I also found myself filling whatever role needed filling at any given time: frontline tech support, team agile coach, company retrospective moderator, engineer mentor, project lead, 3rd party integration architect...
