My current company has me stationed 10 miles outside of New York City. Working in this area has proven to be very challenging with the amount of restrictions placed on the construction industry, but I am up for the challenge and I am loving the experience! I am the lead superintendent for a development project; it is a ground up Verizon Wireless store. Last year I completed two projects, a Chipotle Mexican Grill in Raleigh, North Carolina and an AutoZone in Fairbanks, Alaska. I was also involved with the development of a Walgreen’s Pharmacy and a Buffalo Wild Wings. Specifically I work for the development side of Frontier Building Corporation which buys properties, develops them and leases them out to corporate clients. My role in the company is to oversee the construction of projects as well as manage the sub-contractors from the start of the project through completion. Some of my responsibilities include – Maintaining a safe job site. Creating look ahead schedules. Set up office trailer and other site specific necessities. Frequently review and maintain an intimate knowledge of project specifications. I take progress photos periodically to document the achievements of each day. Frequently walk the jobsite to inspect the quality of work and the productivity of crews. Frequently communicate with the architect and engineers to ensure a high quality project. Schedule third party testing agencies. I often work with local officials and AHJ’s to obtain building permits and or CO’s. Meet and coordinate with local utility companies to get services set up for the site. I maintain a positive relationship with the local unions if it is a union job as it was in Alaska and New York. This is just a short list of my daily responsibilities. To sum it all up, I am the “feet on the ground” and with the support of my team, I am the one that makes sure that each project stays safe, keeps moving, gets done on time and within budget and is quality built to the blueprints.
