In support of our personalized health care and digitalization ambitions, I created an entirely new global technology function at Roche dedicated to science.Building on my past accomplishments and experience I partnered with multiple Roche affiliates across the globe to collaboratively create services dedicated and designed for scientific use. Using modern and hybrid infrastructure and software tools that enabled state of the art machine learning and computational scientific capabilities through continuous delivery and automation. Unique to these services is the acknowledgement that science is borderless and must support all forms of collaboration, internal and external. To achieve this I recruited and am mentoring a multicultural global team that is both scientifically and technologically diverse. This team created 10 entirely new integrated services that are easy to enhance and scale as well as dedicated foundational infrastructure in networking, identity & security for science. As part of the site and global leadership teams I helped deliver on Roche’s ambitions, providing vision and guidance to all members of our global function.

An acknowledged innovator for the past 7 years I have lead the efforts to leverage HPC & cloud based technologies in support of R&D, enabling many pilots that accelerated IT activities including on-demand infrastructure, virtual desktops, genomics databases, data warehouses & lakes. External leadership activities include serving as the Pfizer representative for the AWS Customer Advisory Board (CAB) and Chair for the external cross-Pharma High Performance Computing forum. Responsible for the vision/strategy, design, delivery and operation of enterprise HPC providing integrated data management, computing resources, HPC software engineering, support and technical consultation on both established (e.g. MPI) and emerging (high performance container) technologies in the areas of Disease Biology, Human Genetics, Computational Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Statistics, Quantitative Pharmacology, Drug Metabolism, Clinical Studies & Development globally, to perform large-scale analyses, modeling studies, forecasting and reporting using and data scientific tools including jupyter-notebooks, R, python and Hadoop data lakes. Current innovations include seamless integration of AWS cloud computing into HPC, providing scale out capacity from our data center in support of NDA filings, biological target virtual screening. Other notable efforts include sponsoring and successfully executing an enterprise-wide analysis, implementation and deployment of Macintosh systems to the enterprise at Pfizer.

Chosen to be a member of the Groton scientific leadership, responsible for developing and executing Pfizer’s strategy to deliver therapeutics through an integrated deep understanding of disease processes and the chemical and physical characteristics of therapeutic agents. Provided leadership and supervision for an integrated computational sciences group that advanced successful Discovery efforts by developing and applying leading edge machine learning, knowledge based models & decision enabling in-silico approaches. Enabled all computational scientists by providing an effective computational laboratory with state-of-the-art integrated computational resources. I oversaw efforts in the development of new computational approaches describing complex disease processes with phenotypic relevance, enabling the selection of disease modifying targets, as well as appropriate diagnostics and/or pre-clinical biomarker capabilities to identify, design and optimize the development of therapeutics that are safe and efficacious utilizing computational fragment-based and biophysical approaches. I was active in the development and optimization of new scientific methodologies where we are developing a variety of new computational approaches ranging from a detailed representation of RNA expression profiles at the scale of the whole human body for both healthy and diseased tissue as a key enabler for building disease differential networks to new approaches for designing chemical agents that have unique thermodynamic and kinetic properties that provide advantageous efficacy, PK/PD and safety characteristics.

Provided leadership and supervision for three diverse, dynamic groups and a global team. Delivered a unique custom portfolio process for managing & planning a collection of technology portfolios (9 disciplines and 24 key enabling capabilities), through a unified global suite of core decision enabling tools and a state of the art 3D database for the Pfizer corporate sample collection. Managed a group of 29 computational and experimental scientists / managers at the Groton Research site and was accountable for an $18M global software budget, negotiating over $2M dollars in annual savings to meet organizational goals.Served as a member of the organizing committed for the site leadership committee and was active in the planning of many leadership sessions and off-site meetings.Served on or lead several global scientific and integration limited duration teams that consolidated best practices, placed key talent and advanced or Research capabilities.
