We walked into a real mess at the Rose Garden Arena on January 1, 2005: Paul Allen had thrown the building into bankruptcy, the arena had become outdated, and the Blazers sucked.Right away, phone calls began pouring in from dismayed season ticket holders asking about everything from the status of their seat relocation request to why we hadn't run their credit card yet. Advertisers wanted to know what we were doing to fulfill the terms of their sponsorship agreement.Most of the time, my reply was, "I'm sorry but I don't even know where your contract is!" (It took weeks to go through the um-teen boxes of files containing all of the season ticket and advertising contracts.)We had to move fast. From scratch, we built a professional sales and support staff that helped sort things out, get organized, and get sales headed back in the right direction.We got to work on upgrades that brought the arena into the 21st century and helped attract new premium seat holders.Our event management staff booked more events than the Rose Quarter had ever seen. Within 12 months, arena staff was re-energized, the 'RG' was bustling with lots of entertainment, and the lenders who hired us were happy with the improved bottom line.Alas, in May of '07, Paul Allen bought the arena back and the Trail Blazer front office execs resumed control of the arena.I was offered a chance to sell sponsorships for the Blazers, which might have been fun, but I'd already been down that road. I was done - sick of working long hours and tired of working for someone else. I was ready for my next big thing, I just didn't know what it was. It took me a few years to figure it out :)

I had 3 standout moments working for the Baysox.In 1994, I sent our team's first email blast to the few thousand emails we had. I like to think I was ahead of the curve on email marketing :)In 1998, I decided I wanted to buy my first home. To do it, I needed to have a huge sales year with lots of fat commission checks. So, I cut out a picture of the house I wanted and taped it to my computer screen. I installed a contact management system and set specific goals for myself. Then I implemented it and 9 months later I'd earned enough in sales commissions for the down payment on my first house in Annapolis. In my first full year as general manager in 2004, we absolutely killed it. We crushed the prior year's budget by 40% and produced one of the greatest bottom lines in club history. We did it by creating and promoting new stadium events like Laila Ali outdoor boxing, Allen Iverson Celebrity Softball, professional cricket, drive-in movies, Career Fairs, and a New Car Sale right in our parking lot. I didn't do it alone - we had a kick ass staff that helped set all-time highs in group sales and sponsorship revenue. It felt great to blow away the budget that year. I made lifelong friends working in baseball and am thankful to Keith Lupton for giving me the opportunity to get started.
