About Mike Nowlin

Mike Nowlin, currently serving as Director of Operations at the Institute for Human Services, has 25 years' of mission driven work in the child welfare, mental health and international development sectors, including 14 years as a mid-level and senior executive manager for non-profit and government entities. Mike's current management of the day-to-day business and contracts is driven by his compassionate, servant leader management style and a focus on continuous quality improvement. This work has included supporting the management of the Ohio Child Welfare Training Program that provided professional development and job-specific skills building for thousands of child welfare professionals throughout Ohio. Previously, Mike lived in SE Asia, leading the management team at Hagar Cambodia, an organization dedicated to supporting women and children who have survived gender-based violence and human trafficking. After four years in Cambodia, he returned to the USA, serving as the Executive Director of Hagar USA, a fundraising office for Hagar International. His time at Hagar follows on from Mike’s experience in Ohio’s largest public child protection agency as Associate Director of Performance Improvement from 2008-2013. Mike has a depth of skills including executive management, organizational operations, program management, fundraising, partnership building, strategic planning and direct social work practice. As a manager of numerous teams throughout his career, his leadership approach is an extension of his belief in creating safe and positive team environments; empowering staff to reach their full capacity; and ongoing assessment of staffing, their functions and pain points to collaboratively identify efficiencies.
