Developed Oracle PL/SQL code and database schema changes for the pricing function of a travel booking platform used by UK and international tour operators. The work covered bug fixes and new developments, including the use of Oracle extended tracing to diagnose performance issues.

Managed the roll-out of the OpenEyes system (open source electronic medical records for ophthalmology) to four NHS Trusts. Personally responsible for liaison with trust IT departments and deployment of the virtual servers and software installation, as well as integration of patient demographic HL7 messages using Mirth Connect and XSLT transformations. Additional responsibilities for managing the development of OpenEyes for a variety of customers and release management in Jira and GitHub.

Contract to develop enhancements to a legacy vehicle order processing system. This involved creating detailed technical specifications and then developing the necessary code modules; primarily using PL/SQL but also some Java and C++.

An initial contract that was extended multiple times to cover a variety of roles and business domains:• Developing a reporting database for BIS Export Control Organisation; responsible for implementing the business rules in PL/SQL to prepare the public domain data, and writing the reporting queries in SQL.• Re-engineering the Enhanced Environmental Monitoring System (EEMS) for oil and gas returns into the DECC Energy Development Unit’s oil portal; responsible for design of the data model and all back-end processing and APIs using PL/SQL.• Leading the client’s infrastructure team, including the deployment of Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) 10g to the development platform, and its subsequent upgrade to 11g.• Developing a new online licensing application for the Marine Management Organisation (MMO); responsible for data model design, implementation of the GIS functionality (coordinate entry including KML upload, rendering with Oracle MapViewer, and export to KML and Shapefile), and on-line payment processing.• Researching and implementing the migration of all the client’s supported systems from Oracle 10g to 11g.• Developing a replacement online application system and public interface for the DECC Energy Technology List (ETL); responsible for data model design and migration of data from the legacy system.Between the major projects, much work was undertaken on generic components common to most of the client’s applications, especially in respect of performance tuning. Time was spent coaching other team members, including presentations and tutorials in the regular development team meetings.Extensive experience was gained working with XML documents in the Oracle database, in addition to experience with Oracle Spatial and on-line payments.

Contract to provide Oracle administration expertise for the deployment of a new on-line gaming project. The architecture included a primary clustered database, replicated to a second site, with additional test databases on both sites. Full responsibility for all Oracle administration tasks, including: installation of client and server software; database configuration; creation of a backup schedule using RMAN; analysis of transaction performance; database monitoring during performance test runs; and regular duplication to the test databases.

Contract to provide development and administration expertise for a variety of directory publishing projects. Development tasks were focussed on the back-end database components of a new SOA platform for provisioning online products. In addition a data replication process was re-engineered from a complex extract, transfer and import process to use materialized views for simplicity and improved performance.Database administration tasks included: Refreshing development and test databases; Performance analysis of batch and online transactions using extended tracing; Pro-active monitoring of a production database to prevent space and performance issues, usually resolved with out-of-hours maintenance; Creation of user accounts and granting of privileges; Promotion of code modules to test and production databases, including responsibility for the configuration management system; Mentoring of a developer to take on some development DBA tasks.

Initial contract to analyse a number of billing issues for the company’s client, and to develop data and code fixes to resolve these. Contract subsequently extended three times for a major development project for the same client. This work included analysis of requirements, development of data models to support new functionality, development of new packages and changes to existing core functionality. Performance tuning was also undertaken during various test cycles.Received a letter of thanks from the company’s CEO for successful delivery of the major development project, which had contributed to the company’s best quarterly results.

Contract to implement bug fixes and enhancements to a data warehouse project during customer acceptance testing, and to resolve issues identified when using production data volumes.A batch job would fail for the largest market segment after 2 hours’ processing, owing to excessive use of temporary space. An alternative design was applied and the resulting program ran to completion in 4 minutes.

System to collate directory data from several maintained and unmaintained sources, add value with an on-line front-end used by call centre agents to contact businesses, and then extract the data for a variety of channels: The Phone Book, directory enquiries, and on-line sites. Joined as a senior developer responsible for code modules that would be used for both batch and on-line processing; then assumed additional responsibility as the project’s development DBA.Introduced a framework for collecting appropriate optimiser statistics and system statistics. This has the effect of reducing two hours’ elapsed time from the batch schedule.Automated a manual process to extract a subset of production data and re-build development environments with that data. Performing this on a regular basis ensured that development and testing used clean, up-to-date data which improved the quality of deliverables.

System to collect, mediate and price conferences with a variety of near real-time and batch processes, prior to invoicing with Oracle Applications Financials. Joined as development team leader with responsibility for the automation of manual billing processes; then took on the role of pricing manager which involved implementation of pricing rules for new products and driving development of the functionality of the bespoke pricing engine.The number of manual processes performed by the billing team was reduced. This in turn reduced the number of late-billed conferences per month from 5% to less than 0.01% on average, with a corresponding significant increase in revenue and cash-flow.Received several monthly and quarterly “star awards” from the Director of BT Conferencing.

Platform to serve static and dynamic content securely to a global user community using PKI digital certificates for authentication and an Oracle database for authorisation. Joined as a team leader for the development of new dynamic applications; then led the technical architecture team.Re-engineered the core security module, reducing validation time for a page impression by 50%. This significantly improved the speed of the extranet and hence end-user satisfaction.Solved a problem with uploading files to the secure extranet, using a novel solution that avoided bugs in the web server. This functionality was essential to widen the market for new customers.

System for producing usage reports for customers’ toll-free, local, national and premium lines. Joined as a senior developer and quickly moved into a team leadership role. Gained experience in leading software development teams and managing the installation of new releases into the production environment.

System for the consolidated billing of major customers. Started as a graduate developer and gained experience in all areas of the software development lifecycle, from feasibility studies to on-call support.
