About Michael Sphar
Tech Support, Sysadmin, Operations, Devops ... the job titles keep changing but for over 25 years I've been working hard (along with a lot of other great people) to build, maintain, fix, and improve first UNIX and then Linux-based services for businesses in medical software, enterprise software , banking, trading, brick & mortar retail services, and online payments. Doesn't matter if it's in the server room down the hall, the datacenter across town or across the ocean, or (most often these days) in the cloud. I'll be part of the team that makes it work, and then makes it work better!Most recently much of my focus has been on Observability and Monitoring: helping dev teams understand the health of their services and how those services are experienced by their customers; helping them transition from the classic tools and techniques of monitoring stable monoliths to the brave new world of monitoring distributed microservices (where something is almost always broken somewhere, but if you're doing it right your customers never notice and you don't have to wake up to deal with it right away!); and also reducing the pain of on-call duty by helping get that storm of pages under control.Along the way sometimes I still find myself elbows deep in some strange problem. Ask me about the time I fixed the service I learned had been crashing repeatedly for over a year by adding a single command to its startup script! Or the even better story of the time I discovered the very specific edge case where sending a UDP message can still be a blocking action. (That one's my favorite!)

Me and my team work to ensure visibility of the health and performance of services running in datacenters and cloud services.We maintain some on-premise tools like Nagios, collectd, statsd, graphite, and grafana that are still keeping an eye on hosts and network gear, and we assist with migrations to more modern services like Datadog for providing monitoring and observability of distributed applications and cloud services.We built and maintain a log ingestion and transformation pipeline that has handled over 9TB/day of logs so far, using tools such as rsyslog, kafka, and fluentd to enrich and structure those logs and ship them to Amazon S3 for long-term archiving and consumption by the data lake, and also to Sumologic for ad-hoc searching, visualizations, and troubleshooting. As more applications move to Kubernetes, we're implementing a daemonset with fluent-bit to capture the high volumes of container logs, automatically extract structured data, and enrich them with Kubernetes metadata.We took over one of the worst paging rotations in the company, and committed ourselves to making it better. Within a year the volume of pages was reduced by over 90% (most of those pages were noise and did not reflect degraded customer experience). We aligned monitoring with SLOs and made refinements to alert rules and Pagerduty to eliminate duplicate and flapping alerts. We established processes and guidelines to keep paging rotations healthy and low-stress and were able to hand that paging rotation back to the development team who now has far fewer sleepless nights. The processes and guidelines we established were then used by other dev teams to make their paging rotations better as well.
