About Mike Spinelli
Mike Spinelli has been immersed in the business, culture, and technology of automotive media for two decades. In 2004 he launched the car culture website Jalopnik, known for its irreverent tone and fearless reporting style, at Gawker Media. In 2008 he was a creative director at the trailblazing streaming-video startup Next New Networks, acquired by YouTube in 2010, and later editor-in-chief of 0-60, an American print magazine influenced by British car mags, founded by Hoonigan’s Brian Scotto. Mike currently is head of content for the Motorsport Network. Previously, he was VP of editorial for creative agency, and longtime collaborator, TangentVector, with whom he produced the YouTube show Top Gear: American Tuned for BBC Studios, and was the writer and story editor for the docuseries “Win the Weekend” for IMSA and Michelin. He has also been a contributor to Road & Track magazine.In 2011 Mike helped launch the automotive YouTube channel /DRIVE, which grew to attract more than three million subscribers with a full-week schedule of automotive programming. /DRIVE was ported to cable television as the show /DRIVE on NBC Sports, which Mike wrote and co-hosted along with The Smoking Tire's Matt Farah and UK auto journalist Chris Harris. /DRIVE on NBC Sports ran for six seasons on NBC Sports Network (NBCSN). In 2015 Time Inc acquired /DRIVE and launched The Drive website. In 2018, Mike was the strategy lead behind a reboot of The Drive under private-equity ownership.Mike was also writer of the TangentVector documentary films APEX: The Story of the Hypercar and APEX: The Secret Race Across America, for which he wrote voice-over dialogue for Ice-T, so now he can retire happy. He's also credited as writer on the TanVec-produced motorsports documentary features, Pikes Peak: On the Edge (2020), No Perfect Formula (2024), and Edith: Volcano Ascent (2024). Mike is a longtime magazine nerd, and has written extensively on automotive subjects as a contributor to Road & Track, Wired, Popular Science, Popular Mechanics, Maxim, GQ, Outside, Worth, Intersection, Classic And Sports Cars, and The New York Times. He also hosted the Sirius satellite radio show "RPM" on Maxim Radio with Matt Farah and muscle-car aficionado Mike Musto.In addition to motoring journalism, Mike has extensive experience bootstrapping online content efforts, building and engaging a specialized audience, publishing via social media and developing successful, cross-platform digital media strategies, all of which just means he likes building things that bring enthusiasts together.
