About Mike T.
I have spent my whole working life in technical roles - primarily as a software engineer/developer, but I have also travelled the world as a technical trainer and consultant. For the last few years I have had a more managerial role and am part of a global technical team. I project manage various initiatives for my department, and run technical hands-on training workshops for intelligent buildings/lighting applications. Although there is a lot of high-level responsibility here, I remain very hands on and often find myself getting stuck in to the more technical aspects of the role.

Manager, Application Support
Responsible for the IT systems used both within the UK and globally within our business division. A wide-ranging role, this includes responsibility for:- Our Customer Support Portal which is a business-critical system for our installers, end users, and internal staff.- Delivery of on-site workshop training for our CoreSync product range to installers & system integrators.- Management of development and delivery of a new Quotation solution for our Sales teams.- Delivering internal training sessions on our systems to Sales and other business members.- Development/Coding of our Electronic Tools for Windows application, of which I am particularly proud. - Administration of our company's Salesforce implementation. - Local office IT supportAnother aspect of the role I enjoy is managing a team in India. Remote management is a skill in its own right, and ultimately it is my role to nurture them and ensure they become the best versions of themselves, as well as making sure they are contributing towards the company's success. Finally, I am part of our Global Technical Team, working with colleagues in countries around the world to ensure the necessary support & tools are available for all of our regional Sales teams.
Software Application Support Specialist
Initially taking care of our Customer Support Portal from an administrative point-of-view, this role actually mainly involved working on an industrial and commercial lighting system from defining requirements, writing specifications, working directly with outsourced development companies to ensure compliance with our requirements, and testing the software when completed. My background in software development came in extremely useful here as I was able to leverage my technical knowledge and understanding in my documentation as well as interactions with the programming team. Unfortunately due to circumstances outside of my control, this project was cancelled in September 2017.
Developer / Application Experience Manager
Originally taken on as a software developer utilising C# and SQL Server, I was responsible for development, maintenance, and support of our key Warehouse picking & packing software. This meant developing both server side software for the database and administration application as well as client software running on Windows Mobile 6.5 handsets using the .Net compact framework. In addition to the Warehouse software, I also maintained a Visual Display application, used primarily by card and seed vendors. As I had previous experience of integrations and customer relationships, I project managed many implementations, gathering customer requirements and producing project specifications and quotes. I took personal responsibility for developing any custom functionality that the customer required, whether it be within the C# codebase itself, SQL backend, or otherwise. As the company moved towards developing a Product Catalogue and Sales Order Capture system built on Apple’s iPad platform, the workload for the warehousing software lessened, and I moved over to be a part of that team. Although not strictly an iOS developer I was able to have a hand in some areas of the coding and bug fixing on Apple’s Xcode platform, and provided technical customer support for the app. I also began to leverage some of my prior experience to garner new customer requirements and worked with the implementation team to make sure the customer had the solution they needed. I took on an account management role for existing customers, sitting between sales, implementation, and support, to proactively contact existing customers and make sure they were getting the best out of the software and informing them of new functionality that they may be interested in as time went by.
Analyst / Programmer
Key responsibilities included the design, development and implementation of software solutions for a commercial mortgage lender. This covered both the internal software requirements of the company as well as the website and external API’s for use by third parties. This called for design discussions with marketing teams, directors, and third parties to ensure the architecture was as required and that it conformed to agreed specifications. I was also responsible for general IT support company-wide. Due to the technologies utilised by the company I was required to be very flexible in my approach, as the company systems were spread over a range of different platforms and languages. In my everyday role I used the Microsoft .NET framework with C# and ASP .NET, as well as SQL 2005, and some legacy Visual Basic 6 code.
Development Consultant
Working exclusively with Microsoft Navision, responsibilities included coding and providing the interfaces between Navision and client software, development of web applications and services for customer solutions and development of C/AL and C/SIDE code to process business logic. Technologies used here were Microsoft .NET both C# and Visual Basic, as well as the Navision integration tools.
Senior Integration Consultant
As a highly respected authority on the use of our key software integration methodologies, I provided on and off-site consultancy to members of our group and other Systems Union offices around the world. I also designed and coded bespoke application solutions for clients based on their requirements. I was involved with systems analysis, design, testing and quality assurance of the SunSystems suite of products with regards to integration. I dealt on a regular basis with with our internal R&D department as well as customers and provided 3rd line technical assistance to them. I additionally provided services to the global training department by developing and delivering some of their more technical training courses to internal staff and external customers around the world. I used a wide range of technologies in this role from COBOL, to Visual Basic 6, Microsoft .NET (both Visual Basic and C#), Java, SQL and a little Oracle.
Technical Support Programmer
As a programmer in the support department, I helped maintain the SunSystems accountancy product line, where technical issues arose. In this role I used mostly COBOL and SQL technologies.
Programmer
I developed and maintained a motor dealership software suite of applications, focussing mainly on the stock control systems, but also encompassing Service and Accounts. For this role I utilised COBOL on an IBM AIX mainframe.
